I have a huge tooth emergency!! HELP??

Ok, i've had my braces taken off about a month ago, and i have noticed that i have little brown stains in between my teeth. I don't drink coffee or smoke. I do drink tea occasionally, but not the very dark one, i usually drink green tea, which is light colored. I tried scraping of the stains with a needle to see if they come off, and they do, so it's not cavity, besides, i brush my teeth twice a day, i floss every day, and use mouth wash also teice a day. Toothpaste is Crest Pro Health and the mouth wash is also Crest pro health. Is there anything i can do to remove them besides going to the dentist? I think i could have scraped them off with a needle but it's not thin enough to go really in between my teeth. Help please

Look I sudy dentistry you need to have your teeth cleaned at the dentist.

and as you you say you can remove it using a needle so you have first class stains and plaque (a film of Bacteria and mucus that commonly forms on teeth).

and the most important is to brush your teeth regularly after having your teeth cleaned or you will have it back.

and dont use a needle again because it reduces the the enamel and I think you know that the enamel can't be formed again after the embryonic phase.
Reply:Get a whitening package like crest and see if that helps, also, call your orthodontist and see if they can recommend anything.
Reply:no offense, but this isn't a "huge tooth emergency"... go see your dentist, and if you no longer have one, call your ortho office and get a recommendation... your teeth need to be professionally cleaned. It's not a big deal. Good luck to you!

Sinus headache and toothache..Doctor or Dentist?

I had a (24 hour) stomach sickness last week that somehow turned into allergies/cold. I don't know which. I thought I was getting better...Started draining with the over the counter meds and now I have a horrid headache behind my right eye, a sore throat ..sometimes earache and a PAINFUL upper molar tooth! I wanted to tough it out to see if it passes but it's 2am and I'm up and miserable.

If anyone is reading this and has a clue, do you recommend I try for a walk in doctor at the clinic tomorrow or an emergency dental exam?

it seems like a sinusitis. u must visit a doc tomarrow. but for now drink some warm tea or smt.(not hot). a paracetamol can make u feel better too.
Reply:Well, I'm not a doctor, sounds like a virus, but pain %26amp; draining could be caused by inflammation, which means the body's like on fire. If you go to your grocer's spice rack, look for a bottle of a spice called TURMERIC.

Buy it. Take it home %26amp; 1st try 1 slightly heaping teaspoon of it in your mouth (under your tongue) with a lukewarm lemon-water "chaser".

Drink at least 1 mug full of this water.

Not too much lemon if you don't like it.

Just about 1/2 or 1 level teaspoon of it so the water gets absorbed faster %26amp; better.

This beats inflammation. If you don't feel better in an hour, take another one just like before.

You can't overdose with this as it's a food (a spice).

Just don't take 1/2 a bottle in 1 day or anything.

Then lie down %26amp; relax completely.

Close your eyes %26amp; breath in FULLLY through your nose,

hold it one or 2 seconds, then

VERY SLOWLY exhale through your mouth.

This slows everything down a bit.

It should take you about 50% longer to EXhale than it did

to INhale. Try it maybe 1/2 a dozen or a dozen times %26amp; try to sleep.

If you still have it tomorrow, buy a bottle of the strongest "colloidal silver" you can at a health food store %26amp; take a tablespoon of it, holding it under your tongue for 1 full minute before drinking it. And do it every 1/2 hour for about 1-3 hours to make it kill as many germs/pathogens your body may have.

Also, with the dropper, drip a drop or 2 into your ear

(no it can't hurt you; it's the world's 1st antibiotic, %26amp; natural).

It'll kill any ear infection too. Lay down with the good ear on the bed %26amp; try to stay that way a while so the silver attacks the germs in your bad ear. You can re-do it again in a few hours if you want; it can't harm the ear.

You can drip some ON your molar repeatedly %26amp; rub it into the gum there. Or saturate a small cotton wad with silver %26amp; apply it to the painful molar's surrounding tissue so it soaks in.

If all continues by tomorrow noon, call your dentist for an emergency dental visit or just go %26amp; sit there til she/he sees you.

Pain is your body telling you something's wrong, so try not to take DRUGS which may mask the communication your body is giving you.
Reply:hmmm, sounds like you could have the start of a severe sinus infection/ complicated by a toothache.

I think you need to do both, go to the dr and get a antibiotic, because either waysinus infection or tooth infection, they are gonna have to get rid of it before they can treat you..

I think that you should go to the dentist, also to be honest-- that could be the reason why you had a sickness last week, but has just gotten to the point of severe pain....

An example as to why i say this is:

i once had an earache - went to the Dr and he referred me to a Dentist - found out it was my wisdom teeth - I was then sent to an oral surgeon and had them removed.

You have done enough trying to cure this on your own... do not tough it out anymore and get to the DR's ( dr and dentist!)

Reply:Thats rough, I'm sorry you're dealing with it. Sinus problems can cause teeth pain, can an ear infection. Your symptoms sound like it could be either or both.

If you know the tooth is unrelated and will need to be pulled or filled realize that its best to not have other infections when going in for dental work.

I'd try by going to the walk-in clinic and seeing if there's something they can do for your symptoms first. This might clear up the toothache as well, and you'll get in a lot quicker then at the dentist. Just know the walk-in clinic wont do anything to address any teeth issues, they'll tell you to see your dentist. Heck, if its that bad, maybe go see both!

Reply:I second everyone else's recommendation. Go to the doctor first for a checkup and antibiotics, then the dentist to get the tooth probably pulled, but definitely do go to both and don't let the tooth fester.

Should I still go to the dentist?

This morning I having absolutely terrible tooth pain but now I've taken just some extra strength Tylenol and it's dramatically subsided. I made an emergency appointment for tomorrow morning and I don't really have the money to pay for it....should I still go and see what the problem is or wait until it hurts again?

Reply:I would still go...teeth are meant to hopefully last a very long time. Trust me a tooth canal will hurt TONS more if you let it fester....and sometimed dentist will arrange payment arrangments for you if you can't afford it right away.
Reply:if it hurts after the tylenol wears off, yes. Maybe you're stressed lately and have clenched your jaw, and this prompted the pain? But you may have an abcess or cracked tooth, and having it checked is the best bet.

How to get emergency dental help w/o insurance or money to pay for dental work?

My tooth aches extremely as I type! I have no insurance and I have no money at all to even pay for service. I have not seen a Dentist in over 4 years because I could not afford it and I have no Insurance. I know my teeth are extremely bad! I can easily feel the holes in my teeth. I have chunks of tooth dropping everytime I eat. What am I to do? I have looked everywhere online to get help here in Indiana and I get nothing anywhere close! I need to get this done fast! Like today It needs to get worked on! HELP!!!!!

Some dentists will set up a payment plan. You just have to talk to them.

OR....if you don't mind credit cards, there's one called Care Credit. It's for Doctors, dentists, and vets only. You can apply online at their website, carecredit.com, or at your dentists' office if he's willing to do the paperwork for you. I have the card. I got it for emergency purposes like you. I dont' have insurance either and needed a filling replaced. Not cheap at $300. The card helped tremendously. Check it out if you don't mind having a credit card. But like I said, the card can only be used at doctor, dentists, and vet offices, so you'll have less chance of out of control spending on it.

Huge dental emergency!?

I have a denture that came out while I was trying to tighten it - in other words, I was messing w/ it when I probably shouldn't have been. I would go to the dentist to have it fixed but he really creeps me out and I was just there recently. My mom might get mad when she finds out. I want to glue it back in w/ some Krazy Glue or nail adhesive but I'm afraid it might poison me. So has anybody had experience w/ this type of thing? As you can tell, this is a very big problem and it is almost 2 a.m. where I am! thanks!

You can buy kits to repair dentures at any drug store. They aren't expensive. The problem is that they often don't fix the denture permanently, and the tooth falls out again, after a while.

Reply:go home depot first thing in the morning and buy the special glue, they work, and you can really take it off too with oil-base remover when u want to; many dentist use those similar glue as well

I need emergency dental help in Mass?

Divorced mom of 3, 2 of my kids are autistic so the state basically runs my finances...I need dental help desperatly. I am fighting an infection in my caninie tooth that almost reached my brain and they keep denying me any help. They pain is sometimes overwhelming...I just need help. Period. I have yet to meet a dentist that will say..."you know what? Your in enormous pain, and have 3 kids, 2 autistic kids....someone needs to help you." ibuprofen is always the best pain medication for any type of dental pain, but since you are pregnant it does make it more diffcult. What you can do is contact your dentist that you already have by his pager, answering servie.....etc, and let him know the situation. Until you can get a safe prescriprion and type of walgreens or CVS should have a temporary filling material, that is located by the tooth brushes and toothpaste, that you can put on the tooth to help cover it so it can ease some pain, But you really need to speak to your current dentist and get a safe prescription or get seen and get it taken care of. I hope you feel better, and congrats on your pregnancy... ;)
Reply:If you can locate a 24-hour drugstore, go there and get some Anbesol; it's a topical pain-killer, and you won't remotely ingest enough to hurt your baby. You might also consider going to the ER. Good luck!

Reply:Orajel MAY be safe for a pregnant woman. Double-check with a doctor first. It's over-the-counter and similar to the aforementioned Anbesol. You apply it with a swab.

There has gotta be a dental office open on weekends. However, you may have to do some traveling in order to get there.

Seriously. If you're pregnant and you're in this much pain with your tooth - I'd trust them to give me the right amount and type of pain medication.

Many dental clinics have after hours emergency numbers. BUT again, you're pregnant and I personally would rather be seen and treated for pain by a physician not a dentist. Besides, you'd pay about as much to see a dentist for an emergency.
Reply:Go to the ER silly! There might very well be infection. The ER can help you with relief til you get to dentist. There is a chance dentist won't take tooth out til infection is gone.
Reply:Call your OB tell him exactly what happened and follow his advice .. Go to local ER and give them the name of you OB They have to get you stable until a dentist is available. An oral surgeon is always on call at local hospitals. Don't suffer hun please get help.
Reply:The best thing to do if you are in severe pain with a tooth problem is go to Accident %26amp; Emergency. There is no point in sitting around suffering. Tooth pain can be excrutiating and is considered an emergency if you are out of your mind with pain. Also you are pregnant and your baby may be distressed if you are distressed. Good luck, and remember, tooth pain is considered to be worse than childbirth!

Reply:Does he have a dentist? If so the dentist should have an after hours number you can call. I know mine does but thankfully I have never had to use it.
Reply:I have never heard of a hospital with a dentist on call. There are supposed to be topical things you can put on a decayed tooth to stop the pain for a while. I had a toothache once and it was horrible. I hope he gets this taken care of soon.

If he has a regular dentist, he might be able to reach him for a recommendation.

Reply:Call your family dentist. This is one of the reasons you need to have one, so they will come to your aid even on a weekend. My son 7 , had been to see the dentist on a Thursday. On Saturday morning he had a toothache that would have brought a grown man to tears. We called our family dentist and he drove back from his weekend cabin over 200 miles to take care of him. If you have a family dentist, they will usually come in, or find someone to take care of you if you are a regular patient.
Reply:yes, but I don't recommend it. Hospital doctors aren't trained to deal with problems in teeth. I've heard horror stories of things in the ER that should not have been done. Don't you have a dentist you can call? Most will come in after hours for emergencies.
Reply:om i had a horrible horrible toothache a couple weekends ago and i called the doctor on call and he told me to take 4 200 mgs of ibuprofren and then take 2 extra strenght tyenol and it really did help the pain and i kept putting a wet washcloth in the microwave and just kep that warmth right on my cheek maybe he can try it hope he feels better

My mom just had the top part of her mouth done at the dentist and now has a partial denture on the roof of her mouth. She is in a LOT i repeat a LOT of pain and i need to know maybe a home remedy or something that could help her sore gums. I know having your teeth removed is painful but I just need to help her so anything will be appreciated.

Reply:When I had tooth pain, Aleve helped me more than Tylenol or Advil. I also used ice packs to numb the area. Tooth pain is terrible! Best of luck to your mom!!!

Reply:The dentist should have given her some pain meds. If he didn't then you or she should call him and tell him that she is in pain.

I know they like the partials to stay in, because it helps the gums to form to them, but yes it's painful.

She can take over the counter pain relievers too, but I would go for the prescription. Call the dentist.

Reply:Geeze... you need to be carefull. My aunt had to be rushed to a hospital in an AMBULANCE for the same reason. There was an infection that spread after getting dental work done. Has she tried calling the dentist to make sure this is normal?

Anyway, the only thing Ive found to work is holding whiskey over the part of your mouth that hurts. It helps numb it... really helpfull

Reply:Clove oil is often used to help relieve dental pain. However, it needs to be diluted or it could burn her mouth. You might want to find a product called OregaDent. OregaDent is made with essential oils of wild oregano, wild pain root, clove bud and cinnamon.

I recently had a couple of teeth extracted and developed dry sockets. Clove oil and OregaDent provided immediate pain relief.
Reply:Did her dentist prescribe a pain medication? If so, she needs to take it right on the dot every time it's due. Taking it with a caffeinated drink will help it work better, too. If the dentist didn''t prescribe pain meds or the ones she has aren't helping, she needs to call the dentist ASAP. Although pulling teeth hurts, she shouldn't be in tons of pain. If she didn't get any pain meds from the dentist, she can take 4 ibuprofen while she waits. She might also try warm and cold packs on her face - a warm pack for 15 minutes, wait 15 minutes, then a cold pack for 15 minutes, and so on.

Help EMERGENCY!!!!!?

ok, a part of my tooth chiped off on the left side outside part, and now on the left side inside part my gum has swelled up and it hurts (this is now two days after), what should I do, I really dont wanna go to a dentist they really freak me out, not a joke!! PLEASE HELP!!!

Sorry, but you have no choice. I would go ASAP, you dont want to wait to long. Most likely you will just need a little filling to close the chip.
Reply:Um, seriously, I would say go to the emergency room, and see one of their dentists. in the meanwhile, rinse and gargle with baking soda in water solution, and take some tylenol extra strength. Either way, it sounds like you will have to go to a dentist in the near future b/c this wont go away by itself (sorry).
Reply:I don't know why horror stories about dentists persist to this day. All the pain you will experience will be BEFORE you go to the dentist, putting it off and making it worse.

Your teeth cannot repair themselves, so a visit to a dentist is necessary. Please try to relax about it. If you explain to the assistant or dentist that you are terrified, I'm sure they'll go out of their way to reassure you and treat you very carefully. Hopefully they'll have nitrous oxide, "laughing gas" and will administer it to you to put you in la-la land, with no injection needed, you just breathe it and magic happens!

Please don't be afraid and get yourself taken care of. There really is nothing to be frightened of! You will be so relieved afterwards! The downside is: It's almost New Year's, and good luck finding anyone in the office till Tuesday.

If your gum is swollen, in the meantime, rinse with warm salt water to help with the discomfort. Take some pain pills; ibuprophen or Tylenol, whichever works for you. One more suggestion...get a VERY SOFT toothbrush, run it under hot water to soften it even more, go sit down with it and VERY GENTLY apply the bristles to the swollen area. This will clean the bacteria out of the area for faster healing. Good luck!
Reply:The area that has swelled can either just be an irritated area from the rough tooth or more likely an infection. Letting this go could cause you more pain and tooth, gum, and bone damage.

Unfortunately, I think you have to go to a dentist. Ask your friends for the name of a dentist that they like and trust. Set up a consultation appointment for them to just look at the area so you don't have to fear a procedure. Maybe they can alleviate your fear of the dentist by determining the cause of your fear or give you something to ease your anxiety like Valium. Good luck!

I broke my bottom retainer... again! I had braces for 5 years and took them off last January 5th... do you think my teeth with shift?

Last time I went 2-4 weeks without wearing my retainer and I think they shifted a little.

can't see the dentist for at least a week.

A week or two without them won't make a lot of difference, the teeth will shift back with constant wearing of the new retainer for about a week.

If your can find your model, you can drop both off at your orthodontist or dentist office. They can make the "repair" or "remake" using the old model without seeing you for new impressions, and they can re-make it in less time. For a repair to be done, it will depend on "where" the break is and if it's "missing" any material. Since the retainers are less than a year old I would assume that the model is still good, meaning there have been no changes with your teeth such as crowns, and the model hasn't been broken or chipped, if both teeth and model are the same, then this will work for a new retainer to be made from, or for this retainer to be repaired with. Always keep up with your retainers and your models, both are valuable when a repair or replacement is needed.

I disagree with George, the lowers do and will tend to shift, even "faster" due to the tongues constant thrust. The teeth aren't kept together in a "tightly closed" or "clenched" position thorough out the day or night, unless you grind or clench at night. If that were the case, no one would ever need lower retainers. Lowers are the first to shift when retainers aren't worn.

Additional information: Six months is too long. See your dentist for the repair, he can send it to the lab. Even if you don't have your model, the dentist can take the impressions and have a new retainer fabricated or this one repaired. Don't wait, you will regret it if you do.
Reply:Lower retainers are not often required; if you are still wearing the upper retainer and the bite is in the proper occlusion, the upper teeth should retain the lower. Wait for your next appointment. No emergency!

Tooth Emergency!?

My brother has awful teeth, okay, not awful but losts of cavities and some chipped teeth.

He hates and absolutely will not see a dentist unless he is sedated. Im having an extremely hard time finding one.

Any advice on what to do? Whats the effects of laughing gas or conscious sedation? I mean, he has to be completely knocked out.

Most dentists today use conscious sedation. I think that's the best way to go. The dentist puts an IV in your arm (my dentist does it so quick it doesn't hurt), then injects a drug that will make you almost go to sleep...very calm and in a dream-like state...you won't have a care in the world! Then it's over really quick and they send you home with pain medicine. Some dentists only use nitrous oxide (laughing gas) which doesn't put you to sleep but just makes you calm. Your brother really needs to go to the dentist and he will feel so much better. Just look in the Yellow Pages and start calling the dentists and they'll tell you if they use sedation.

Reply:I would suggest trying to get your brother to try concscious sedation. It will become very expensive and cumbersome to have general anesthesia just for restorative procedures. The sedation basically puts the patient at ease and decreases their anxiety while they're in the chair. They will still need to cooperate with the dentist for them to complete their work. I think your brother will need to learn to cooperate for him to get good work done in his mouth.

Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. Your gum tissue is not attached to the teeth as high as it may seem. There is a very shallow v-shaped crevice called a sulcus between the tooth and gums. Periodontal diseases attack just below the gum line in the sulcus, where they cause the attachment of the tooth and its supporting tissues to break down. Periodontal diseases are classified according to the severity of the disease. The two major stages are gingivitis and periodontitis. Some factors increase the risk of developing periodontal disease:

Tobacco smoking or chewing

A tooth abscess is a collection of pus that forms due to a bacterial infection in the roots of teeth or in the gum tissue surrounding teeth. The main symptom of a tooth abscess is a severe, persistent, throbbing toothache. Initially, the tooth may be sensitive to heat and pressure with chewing or biting. Later, you may develop a fever, swelling in your face or cheek, and tender, swollen lymph nodes under your jaw or in your neck. If the abscess ruptures, you will have a sudden rush of foul-smelling and foul-tasting fluid in your mouth.

A tooth abscess will not go away without treatment. If the abscess ruptures, the pain may decrease significantly, but dental treatment is still needed. If the abscess doesn't drain, the infection can spread to other areas of the head and neck and even become life-threatening.

Treatment of a tooth abscess is directed at eliminating the infection, preserving the tooth and preventing complications. Treatment may include:

Draining the abscess

Reply:I have suffered with my teeth for many years due to my fear of the dentist. At one point I had 8 rotten teeth in my mouth, some of which had abcesses....that hurt like hell...especially when they burst. I lived on antibiotics! When two of my front teeth started to decay and cracked off at the root I knew I had to face my fears and go to the dentist. My doctor gave me 10mg of valium to take an hour before which helped. As I sat in the dentist chair I felt NO pain whatsoever when he extracted my teeth...only a slight pressure. I didn't even feel the needle as he numbed my gum ....I wish I had gone sooner. I think the best oral hygiene is to brush and floss twice a day.

I have a back tooth with a visible cavity in it and I have lagged to go to the dentist because I did not have insurance.I have an appointment on 3/26 tho because we finally got insuance It hurt randomly pretty bad but would feel better with two tylenol...so today the tooth above it on top starts to hurt and I go brush and listerine (sometimes that helps) and all of a sudden my whole left side tight up to the front left tooth hurst worse than ever and has this cold kind of pullin gout feeling...radiating throbbing..earache...AWFUL PAIN....I took 2 aleve...still terrible...I just took one of my husbands vicodin its so bad...and I NEVER take vicodin...It been 10 minutes only so no change,,,,,should I go ti ER, or try to reschedule for monday, or just wait till the 26th still.....Thanks

ok sounds like you might have an absesd tooth and it could be an emergency because if the poison gets in your bloodstream you could become ill and possibly die,if you cant afford to go to the dentist till monday then what i would do(and im not a doctor,dont get me wrong)but if you have any antibiotics in the house,antibiotics dont loose strenth like normal meds so if they are old,its ok to take them,i would say 1000 mg a day should help with the infection,even if someone else has some,ask family members,someone will have some.thats what you need to help fight the infection till you get to a doctor ok.also go on line to your serch engine and type in what to do for an absesed tooth and it should connect you with medical people who know more than me for sure.try ice packs on your cheek to keep the sweelling down.good luck

Usually if the crown is less than 3-5 yrs. old, it will be replaced at no charge. Sometimes there is a catch like....visiting your dentist for your bi-annual check ups.

If it is an older crown, you will have to pay for it. Some Dr's will work w/ you on a payment plan. Other's prefer full payments. Then there are the Dr.'s that work w/ a company called care credit.

Care Credit is an agency that pays the Dr. for your treatment and you make monthly payments to them. There is no interest charge. The Dr. is responsible for that.

Reply:Keep the air out and it may help the pain. Use chewing gum. sometimes oil of cloves will ease the pain, or just get some oral gel.
Reply:Peppermint or Clove oil work well. A whole clove will work if you don't have oil available. Be sure not to bite down on it; it may cause more pain if she does.
Reply:There really isnt too much you can do this weekend. I'd suggest a large dose of painkillers followed with an alcoholic beverage or several. Drugstores sell temporary filling material in the toothpaste aisle, and its possible that could alleviate some of the pain.
Reply:Soap a cotton ball in vanilla extract, this sounds ridicules but my mother used this technique on us kids all the time. It dulls the pain. Not for long, but it does work.
Reply:I am dealing with a tooth ache right now myself, my appointment is on Tues. So I am using Kanka to keep mine from hurting. You can get it at Wal-Mart where all the dental stuff is at and it does not cost that much either. Reply:First off I wold absolutely NOT recommend alcohol and pain killers you could end up having to rush your mom to the emergency room. It is normally the practice for dentist to have someone on call for weekends and holidays if that isn't the case I would look in the phone book or call something like 1-800-dentist to see if there are any emergency dentist in your area. A temporary filling might be a solution I would give her whatever she normally might take for a backache or headache if the pain gets really bad I'd go to the nearest urgent care clinic if there is no emergency dentist avaiable in your area. I can tell you how to get rid of the pain until you get help. The hint comes from a Chinese-Canadian dentist who uses the method instead of freezing for all dental work.

Pinch the earlobe on the side where the pain is and it will disappear within 10 minutes. (The dentist attaches a clothes peg to the earlobe.) A tight-fitting clip-on earring will also do the trick. It has to be tight, and it has to be continuous.

Acupuncture in the same spot would help, too, of course.
Reply:DO NOT mix ANY pain medication and alcohol as this can have very serious or fatal consequences. Tell your mother to take Motrin to help relieve pain and try squeezing a small amount of Orajel directly into the cavity. Also a cold compress over the face close to the affected tooth can also help reduce pain.

You will be safe, it wont cause you any harm, just make sure you take an anti inflammatory too, just to keep down any swelling. Plus make sure you inform the dentist when you do see one that you took antibiotics that way they will know when the look for signs of infections.

Reply:Basically, and this is just my opinion, as long as you aren't allergic it should be fine. Medical people feel that taking an antibiotic when not necessary will increase your tolerance to the drug in the future. I.E. if you start popping antibiotics and don't have an infection then someday antibiotics may be useless to you (not my opinion but actual medical advice - not from me but from those in the medical field).

So take it if you want. Just follow the directions on the bottle. If you're dentist says you don't have an infection then stop taking it. If he says you do ... you may want to mention that you started taking Penicillin. Just to be on the safe side.

No doubt some people will disagree with me, but if I was in your shoes I'd probably grab a left over antibiotic (after checking with my mom or something lol) and take it til Monday.

Reply:The problem is, once you start, you have to continue using it for an average of 10 days. If you don't complete the entire treatment, whatever infection you have will "hide" in your body until you stop taking the antibiotics, then come back even stronger and more antibiotic-resistant. You can only prevent that from happening by taking the treatment for the prescribed time - which, as I said, is generally 10 days. But no... it won't hurt you... unless you stop too soon.

when you get shots to immunize yourself against, lets say measles, you're really just getting a shot with a little bit of dead measles in it. your body sees the measles and identifies it as a threat and builds white bloodcells to fight it.

when you have an infection, and it gets just a little bit of the antibiotic, not enough to kill it, it sees it as a threat and creates an immunity to it, when the germ passes on to another person, it is now a super-bug, resistant to the drug, the anti-biotics will not work on that strain no matter who caught it.

people cannot gain a tolerance to antibiotics, only the germs do. Jen, it's because of uninformed people like you that most strains of bacteria are now resistant to the drugs we've spent billions creating to fight them. infection used to be the number one cause of death a hundred years ago, it might be that way again in just 5 or more years, you watch....
Reply:Yes, it's OK. It might even be wise as long as you have taken the antibiotic without any undue reaction. You may be able to get a more rapid response if there indeed is an infection; however, don't forget to disclose all this info to your Dr./Dentist
Reply:Don't take penicillin. It shouldn't hurt you, but that isn't the problem. You always have some kind of germ playing around inside of you. If you take the penicillin and it doesn't kill the germ, the germ may develop a resistance to it. If this germ is strong enough to overwhelm your immune system and you get sick, your doctor may have fewer options to work with because you just helped some of those germs develop an immunity to the penicillin.

That is the reason why the doctors always tell you to finish the antibiotics even when you are no longer sick. You haven't killed all the germs, and if you don't kill them off they will become stronger.

If you don't have a crack in the tooth (check in the mirror or have someone look), try using something like Orajel to deaden the pain until Monday when you can check with a doctor or dentist. If you need penicillin, they will prescribe the right amount. If you don't, they will handle it in some other way and you don't take the chance of getting a superbug disease.

Reply:It wont hurt you. But, as a nurse, I do not advise it. Antibiotic abuse is one of the major reasons we have Penicillin resistant infections that are killing people. The more we use antibiotics that we do not need, the more resistant bacteria becomes to them. Keep in mind, also, that drives up health costs for everyone as well - when pharmaceutical companies keep having to research new forms of antibiotics when others become obsolete because of resistance. It's already happening. But, please, continue to contribute to the problem. Don't let the billions of other people who share this earth with you get in the way.

Besides, even if you do have an infection, the antibiotic will not make you feel better instantly. It takes 24-48 hours. You'll probably feel much better until you can get it properly looked at by a professional, and not by "think I know it alls" on Yanswers, by keeping the site clean. Brush your teeth, rinse with a strong mouthwash, and take some ibuprofen to reduce swelling.

Also you can buy something called oralgel - also available at the chemist. (ANS) Its a difficult situation %26amp; you have my sincere sympathies. Finding a local dentist who will take on a new NHS patient is extremely difficult. However, in the short term you do need emergency treatment and the advise about pain killers seems reasonable.

**You can also buy over the counter at a chemist or pharmacy a dental (oral) product called "BONGELLA". This is a product that can safely be given to children or adults alike. It contains a small amount of local anesthetic which when applied directly to the gum or tooth will take the pain away for a time. Its NOT expensive and could be used as a short term treatment until the person can be seen by a qualified dentist.

**The Bongella can placed into the hold in the tooth %26amp; will stop the pain caused by the exposed nerve endings.

**What about going by public transport? i.e. get to the dentist by bus or ask a favor of a relative or friend to take you by car??

Reply:definatley get him to a dentist, call all the practices in your area to see if they are taking on NHS patietns, use the yellow pages (dispite the stigma you will be suprised as there are quite a few places that are, they just dont advertise very well and dont inform NHS direct as they dont want a storm of patietns coming through the door at once) whatever you buy over the counter may help but will not resolve the situation, only professional treatment will, the pain may go away for a while but will come back with a vengence. tooth ache is horrible, i really feel for your brother x

Although this may be very concerning you can wait to have your dentist address this issue, going to the ER or walk in will cost you a pile of money and a bunch of time and they will tell you to call your dentist tomorrow since they have little to no dental expertise. If you finished having new fillings recently in that area the tooth could be sensitive because the nerve of the tooth was irritated in the process. Also, the dentist might need to adjust your bite. Usually the sensitivity will start out right after the filling and then get better over time.

Bless your heart! I know the pain has to be terrible. Try a heating pad. You can try rubbing aspirin on the tooth until it dissolves. There's not a whole lot you can do. You could take some Benadryl to at least make you sleepy. Best of luck.

Chloe thinks that rubbing aspirin on the tooth is going to dissolve the tooth? LOL. I was instructing you to rub the aspirin on the gum to work as a local pain reliever until the aspirin dissolves.....aspirin won't dissolve the tooth. Anyway, it seems that your pain is actually in the bone now as a result to nerve damage. If all else fails, you can actually go the the ER.

It is like massaging.

After, rinse with a listerine, or something that makes the mouth burn a little.

Hold the rinse where the pain is inside, and after about a count of 15, spit.

If it is infection, or just the gums themselves, this will help alleviate the pain a little.

i totally wouldn't put an aspirin on ur tooth to dissolve it. it'll expose the nerve and possibly dissolve neighboring teeth! please don't do it!! exposing the nerve will just mean more pain!

if it gets really bad. maybe go to the emergency room to ask them to give u a shot of lidocaine in that area. that should numb it.

Reply:Have you what is known as a compacted wisdom tooth, one that is growing at an angle. I had to have all four of mine removed, I just remember taking aspirin for the pain.
Reply:dont even think of putting an aspirin on your gum! it will burn your gum. you can have advil or "Novafen" capsules.

Chipped front tooth . . .emergency repair needed?

Yesterday, I felt something funny on my front tooth (one of the big choppers on top). It felt like a tiny crack along the tip of the tooth.

Today, a tiny part of the outer tooth enamel appears to have chipped off . . . It doesn't hurt at all (yet), but I'm concerned that it's going to get worse until I can see a dentist.

Is there any kind of temporary epoxy I can place on the tooth to hold it all together. Or is there some kind of temporary cap I can put on top of it to protect it until can get to a dentist?

I wouldn't put anything on it. That could damage it more. You need to call your dentist and get an appointment for them to look at it. Just don't bite into anything with your front teeth (at least for now!) :) Good luck with your tooth!

Added later: I would not go to the drug store and get a temporary material. Most of the time the dentist ends up having to use the handpiece to remove the material when you wouldn't have needed any or as much drilling done if you would have just left it alone.

Reply:Don't put super glue on it! It prob won't even harden because of the wetness in the mouth so you'll just end up swallowing it or getting some on the lips. Won't feel good. Check the dental aisle at the drugstore. There are special adhesives for fillings, crowns and chips. It's like a gum-like substance. But if it's not hurting, best seems to be to leave it alone until you can get to the dentist. Most offer emergency services. Where they see you the same day or a few days later. Keep it clean and try not to chew on that side. Good luck!
Reply:You can go to your local drugstore and get a temporary filling material..read the directions and put it on. If the tooth starts hurting call a dentist right away because if the chip is bigger you would maybe even need a root canal. Good luck

I have an emergency,?

i had a root canal done on my tooth and yesterday, after the numbness went away it was hurting, when i woke up this morning my face is swollen up, can you tell me if this is dangerous, it is swollen up at the root canal side, where the put in the needle. do you know what i should do. should i use ice to see if it goes down, if there is a dentist here or doctor can you please help me because the swollen part hurt, do i need antibiotics, and the dentist office is closed, my sisters are saying that the swollen part looks very bad. do you know why it is swollen, i did a root canal before but it never ever got swollen, what do you think is work. thanks

hour than the area will hurt. The Dr. is suppose to give you

pain killers (pills) to use at home. Swelling sometimes happens. Call the Dr. office %26amp; the recorded phone message will include an emergency phone number to call.

Reply:I am no doctor but I would recommend taking an advil and putting ice on it. Ice always helps with swelling and advil is an anti-inflamatory so that might help too. But of course don't take that if you are on pain meds. Sorry I couldn't help any more that than, hope you get an answer.
Reply:You had a lot of equipment in your mouth yesterday. I would expect swelling. Use Tylenol and ice packs. Don't worry, it will go down soon.
Reply:hi I have had several root canals and sometimes they do swell up It could be from the work or infection usually my dentist will perscribe antibiotics for a week when I get the root canal, you could call your doctor or go to a walk in clinic for antibiotics also most dentists have some one on call try the office, if you cant reach any one take tylenol extra stregnth and yes ice pack might help also. good luck !

Reply:after RCT. it should not be hurting anymore bec the pulp of ur tooth has been remove already.although there are several fators why it swells. ur dr is the one u should ask.she knows better.a periapical radiograph will show u the problem.dont use icepack,it wont help reduce the swelling. use only pain releiver when ur in pain. antibiotic should be only advice by ur dr. but if u really want to take the medication u can take it 4times a day. for seven days and dont stop until u finish it all.

I have a toothache!!! Nay, 2 of them!!!!! One in each side of my mouth! When my wisdom teeth came in, I was so afraid of the dentist that I put off having them removed for so long that the pressure from them growing in cracked all of the molars in all 4 jaw bones. So now here I sit, 8 years later, with not one but TWO teeth that are KILLING me!!! I have tried everything...tylenol, aleve, aspirin, darvocet, cloves, anbesol, orajel, and now lidocaine patches on my face! LOL I look like a freak here! Don't laugh at me, I AM in PAIN!!! Problem... I have an appointment with my dentist Thursday, but what the frick do I do until then??? Keep in mind if you will.. I have final exams for nursing school over the course of the next 2 days. So if it will knock me out, it really isn't an option.

Hi, what you really need to do is go talk to all your professors, the head of the nursing school, whatever it takes. How can you possibly be expected to perform by any reasonable school?

You are not actually in the REAL world yet, if you have a medical emergency you need to take care of yourself, they can let you make up your exams a couple of weeks later.

Wisdom teeth are dangerous, get them out quick.

Try ice and then heat....fill an empty pepsi plastic bottle with hot water or freeze some to put on pain.

Elevate your head, gargle with apple cider vinegar , salt water.

Take Motrin or Advil with a pepcid AC so u wont get an upset stomach. Good Luck , u will make it, pray to God for starters.
Reply:Did you call around and see if another dentist can see you earlier? If the apt. you have is w/ your regular dentist, and you are an established patient, they may make an exception for you since you are in so much pain. They may also call in an antibiotic and/or pain medicine for you if they can't see you earlier. Either way, call around and ask to be put on a cancellation list.

Also, since tomorrow is Monday, call around 9am. Many offices will have cancellations that they would like to fill in. You could luck up on an appointment that way.

As far as getting some rest goes, keep your head above your heart. This basically means don't lie down flat. Teeth usually hurt worse at night b/c of the bloodflow. Keeping your head elevated helps tremendously.

Reply:An old fashioned remedy was to put aspirin on the tooth, but I've heard that is not a good thing to do, so I'm not advising that. By this time I think you have had your dental appointment which is really the only real solution. There is ambesol, a medicine that you can use for dental pain (you can buy it at the store). That might help some but really don't be afraid of the dentist. If you feel bad about going to dentists you may want to consider the option of having the dentist just put you out (sleeping) while your dental work is done.

Reply:Temporary relief: take three 200mg Ibuprofen tablets and spray you pain areas with something like Chloroseptic (bottle filled with red coloured stuff that almost taste like Buckley's cold medicine at first until it freezes your mouth like when getting a needle before having a cavity removed).
Reply:I had a horrible toothache once and had to wait for the abcess to go down before they could fix it. I was taking like 8 tylenol at a time and it wasn't touching the pain. The dentist told me your body gets used to pain meds, so he said to take ibuprofen for three days and tylenol for three days, rotate back and forth, because your body adjusts to the med and it won't work any more. It worked for me. Otherwise, I don't know...I feel for you and hope you find something that works...I think tooth pain is the worst. (And I've had 2 kids and a kidney stone!)

It is very potent, so don't get any on your tongue. Just a little drop on the painful teeth. Use a toothpick or Q-tip.

you should not take any therapy without goint to a dentist. there may be several reasons for your symptoms.
Reply:warm salt water may ease the discomfort but wont help any infection, have you contacted your insurance company to see if they have info on dentists in your area that accept your ins. or if they would reimburse you for paying to go to a dentist that doesn't?

I know this is a long shot, but if there is a dental school near you they are usually very affordable, quick and the students are supervised so you won't be a guinea pig!

a regular medical doctor can prescribe antibiotics for your infection until you can get the tooth taken care of.

Im not sure where you live but there should be some kind of emergancy free hospital near by, where usually you have to wait all day to get in but at least you will get it done. Sounds serious and gum infections left can lead to so many serious problems. Go to the dentist asap and rinse your mouth as often as you can!

why dont you have hydrogen peroxide? can't you just go out and get some. i recomend that you do that. it should kill the infection (it sounds like you have one)

if you get a fever, then you should defanitly go to the hospital asap, esp. if its over 100 degrees F

oh, and just so you know when you use any of these (hyrdrogen peroxide or salt water), your mouth is going to really burn and could possible make it more irritated.

i hope you get better soon. and if you can, start going to the dentist regularly.
Reply:Ya use that but you prob could be very simple. Look to see if there is any food stuck in that area. Brush and floss and don't touch it or anything for awhile so it can calm down from all the irritation. If it continues and is painful you may have an abscess that is ready to come to a head and you HAVE to go to the dentist for that. Also if you get a NASTY taste in your mouth all of a sudden it is from the abscess. Go to a dentist sweety when you can and you should be good. Good luck!!
Reply:I had an infection 2 years ago, and you absolutely cannot brush it away. Either you grit and bare it until you make an emergency visit to the dentist or you get your hands on some antibiotics. Such as omoxycillin(spelling) or penecillin. Tooth infections are not viral so you can not treat it over the counter it is bacterial. You can not treat ANY bacterial infections without antiobiotics. Even if you have a neighbor or a family friend that has extra antibiotics for infections.

I don't enforce using other peoples prescriptions but i'm just saying you are in pain right..LOL well trust me if you want the infection gone or subsided then get your hands on antibiotics. As long as you know you aren't allergic to anything. For me it's easy because the stuff my mom has I took for an infection I had in my finger.

It will be painful if you don't take something and I doubt you want to down bottles of motrin which I had to do. But like I said get some antibiotics.

It seems you are having acute localized gingivitis with respect to one tooth. Do the warm saline gargling at least four times daily.You can take antibiotics such as amoxycillin500mg twice daily and metronidazole400mg twice daily for three days. I hope it will help. Reply:It seems you have an infection of some kind in your gums. You can go to a pharmacist and they will be able to give you something that will kill any bacteria in your gums. Lots of people get gum infections without the need to go to the dentist. I would see how it goes when you get some stuff from the pharmacist. I wouldnt leave it too long though. If it doesnt clear up with the medication the pharmacist gives you, then you really will have to go see a dentist.
Reply:From your description, it doesn't sound as if you an abscess, but just irritated gums. Careful flossing and brushing may improve it (just don't expect an overnight miracle). It would be a good idea to take this opportunity to find a dentist you like who does accept your insurance. use the saltwater and go to your local health dept and tell them u dont the money for a dentist and they will give u antibiotics for ur infection.

2-Yes, use warm water and salt to help disinfect it(keep doing that until it stops to itch and your gums stop to bleed)

3-When you brush your teeth dont brush the gum around that tooth because you would just infect it even more

4-Wash your mouth with some scope or any other disinfectant mouth wash

5-when you have a chane to see a dentis...I suggest you do go see one.

Reply:No, your not going to die! Most mouth irritations will respond much faster if you gargle 3 times a day with warm salt water. Do not take antibiotics unless prescribed by a dentist. What you're describing doesn't sound like an infection anyway. Go to the pharmacy and in the dental section pick up some GlyOxide antiseptic oral cleanser and place a few drops over the area on the gum. This should help. If you had an infection there would be swelling in your mouth and pain from the swelling. An infection will cause swelling to increase over an extended period of time and you would be in pain. You would then suspect an infection. Your other option would be to go to a health food store such as whole foods, etc., and pick up some drops for gum irritations. These treatments should work for you based on your descriptions of your symptoms. If, after a few days you see no improvement or your pain increases go in to see your Dentist.

I think there are dental clinics you can walk in off the street no appointments needed.

Ask a friend if they have a dentist who is understanding with your issue. Maybe you can charge your doctors visit on a credit card. At least you can make payments.

Reply:it cant hurt to use warm salt water. just swish it around in your mouth (which is also good for a sore throat, you just gargle it). u can find peroxide at any store that has a pharmacy section but i dont think it would be of any help. if the symptoms worsen dont take your chances, just head to a doctor. u dont wanna end up paying alot more if u happen to start losing teeth!
