my dentist is off the whole weekend and on fridays.....the wire is poking me, i cant bend it, or put wax cause it comes off, my cheel skin is peeling and everytime i move my mouth it hurts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i can call for an emergency appointment but she will have to come up to the dentist office by herself, should i call??
and what should i do to stop the pain???
My last bracket on braces came off!!???
Chew up some sugarless gum and pad the area with the gum. It sticks better than the wax. If the gum doesn't cut it, call the orthodontist, you've paid alot for the braces, so what if it inconveniences the doctor! You're the one in pain. That's part of the job.
Reply:You don't want that wire poking you in the cheek. That's happened to me once (the wire slid around in the brackets a bit, so a bit was sticking out and poking my cheek, but the ortho was able to cut that bit off). Definitely call and get it taken cared of asap if you can. As to how to get the wire to stop poking, maybe try doing what above responder said about the gum.

Alternative To Surgery?
I have an old root canal that is sealed with a post. It seems it is sensitive now...10 years later. X-ray shows that there is a tiny bit of canal left uncleared. In dentistry, this leaves room for infection and bacteria to return at any time. I am totally not for surgery unless it is a complete emergency...that's why I still have my wisdoms. Anyway, the dentist said the only alternatives in this case, because the tooth canal is blocked by the post, is surgery by an Endodontist or extraction. Since this is a front tooth, (sort of), I prefer to keep it. I am hoping I find some other cure for the infection so it does not end up in a surgical procedure that will empty my pocket and emotionally kill me. I am currently taking Pennicillinum....is there anyone at all who knows of any alternative. I hear things like go see a natural dentist. What is that? Any solutions at all out there? God I hope so. Thanks for your help.

I had a problem tooth and had it pulled. I was told that the root of this tooth went thru the sinus. The dentist packed it with gel foam and advised me to be careful and not to sneeze, cough, etc. Then, disaster--the stitches fell out followed by the gel packing. Now, I have this weird suction feeling with air--the sinus is back open. I am already taking antibiotics. Is this an emergency or can I wait until Monday morning to see the dentist?

Racism in Orange County in the Dental Practices?
I’d visit a dental office located in Laguna Niguel www.aestheticdentaldesigns.net called the office and explained to the office personal that I was just released from the Mission Hospital ER and I was suffering from servere tooth pain and was told that I needed a root canal from the ER Physician. I asked the receptionist over the phone if the dentist specialized in root canals and the office gal put me on hold, came back to the phone and stated yes that they specialized treating patients with root canals, she went on to say, if this is an emergency that I can be seen the same day.
When I arrived to the Dental office, the appearance of the office looked very exotic with a fancy construction build out something that reminded of a Star Trek movie. I’d notice the Dentist running around in the hall way making copies of documents while I was being entertained by his staff. I was called into a room 20 minutes from waiting in the lobby for X-rays. The technician asked where was I experiencing the most pain and she took X-rays of just three teeth and not the full mouth.
Within 35 minutes, the second gal who was the receptionist walked into the room. Before any treatments or X-ray explanations she begins a sentence with “She did not know what I could afford?” Apprehensively , she begin explaining the findings of the X-ray taken of the three teeth, however I could not understand what she was trying to convey because of her lack of experience reading X-rays. After not understanding the receptionist I’d demanded to speak to the dentist. The dentist finally walked into the room 25 minutes later with a nasty deposition and handed me a flyer of an African American boy who died of rotten teeth. I begin asking questions about the findings of the X-rays, and the dentist responded with a nasty smirk; his actions gave an impression as if he didn’t want to treat, or touch an African American.
He went on to explain the X-rays, and suggested that I should seek another dentist for general treatments and recommended that I should see a dentist that specialized in root canals. I’d asked the dentist for a prescription for pain the dentist in return begins to ask allot of unusual questions as if I was a street person who was a drug user. He hesitated to write the prescriptions and stated that he doesn’t get involved with giving patient prescriptions to medications. He continued to push the flyer in my face of the African American boy who died of rotten teeth because his mother could not afford dental insurance. The dentist went on to say that I would need a crown after the root canal and can be seen by any dentist! Reply:Oh I am so sorry this happened to you. Remember you live in OC and as you know we are known for being "sue-happy" but this is a definite case for a law suit. I cannot believe this dentist would act in such an unprofessional manner %26amp; to top that, I don't understand why you paid him the $200--I would have walked out. You should definitely demand your money back and take this to the medical board he can get in some serious trouble by being discriminatory. He was completely out of line %26amp; you did not deserve this treatment at all.
I really hope that you pursue this and take action, remember if this happened to you then it is going to happen to others as well. You can be the first to put a stop to it. Age, race, color discrimination is illegal in any field, and that most definitely includes dentistry.

Help us settle this halachic question, please. If a doctor, dentist, etc is shomer shabbos, can he/or she take emergency call? That is, would this person be allowed to answer a pager and drive to the emergency room to take care of a patient? Likewise, would he/she be allowed to drive home after the patient is seen?

Not being orthodox, we use power, the phone, and drive. My children and I don't do "strenuous labor", chores, or homework/business during Shabbat.

REALLY bad toothache - please help?
I've got a really bad toothache, it started this morning and it's got worse through the day. It's there all the time and it's really really sore. I've already taken ibuprofen but it hasn't done anything to the pain. My mum's going to phone the dentist first thing tomorrow morning to get me an emergency appointment, but what can I do until then? I'm 14 years old. The tooth already has a filling in it from a few years ago, so I don't know what's wrong with it. Can it get a cavity even though it's already got a filling in it?
Please tell me how I can get rid of this pain, even just for a little while..........
REALLY bad toothache - please help?
I have the same problem with my tooth that has a filling. It hurts one day and not the next. I think it could be that part of the filling has came out and is causing air to get down in the cavity of the tooth. The filling will probably have to be filled. If you have a heating pad that really helps if you lay your cheeck on it. And if you don't have a heating pad, then get a wet wash cloth and put it in the microwave for about 45 seconds. The heat will really help. About the ibuprofen, assuming I don't know how much of it you took, it is safe to take 4 tablets of ibuprofen which equals 800mg. That is prescription strength in which a doctor would prescribe for pain. Not anymore than that though in a 12 hour period. Hope your pain eases.

Most drugstores carry tiny bottles of the oil. Drop a little directly onto the tooth, or dab a little on a cotton ball and pack the elixir next to the ache.
Don't bite. If the toothache is caused by a blow to the tooth, try not to use that area when you eat, says Dr. Corn. If nothing is damaged, rest for the tooth may restore its vitality.
Suck on some ice. Treat the problem like any good bruise. Use ice, says Dr. Corn. Put ice on the aching tooth or the nearest cheek for 15-minute intervals at least three or four times a day.
Keep your mouth shut. If cold air moving past the tooth is a problem, just shut off the flow, says Roger P. Levin, D.D.S., president of the Baltimore Academy of General Dentistry and a guest lecturer for the University of Maryland.
Or keep your mouth open. Some toothaches happen when a person's bite isn't quite right. In that case, says Dr. Levin, avoid shutting your mouth as much as possible until the dentist can take a look.
Swallow your aspirin. Don't believe that old-time remedy calling for placing an aspirin directly on the aching gum. This can cause an aspirin burn, says Dr. Taintor. For pain relief, take an aspirin every 4 to 6 hours as required.
Stay cool. Keep heat away from your aching cheek even if it makes the toothache feel better, warns Dr. Corn. "If it is an infection, the heat will draw the infection to the outside of the jaw and make the infection worse."

Reply:You can try Orajel cream, it will relieve the pain but only for a short time, and it will make your mouth numb. You pretty much just have to be patient until you go see the dentist, unless you just drink nyquil and sleep the day/night away.

Reply:Ouch, sorry you're in so much pain sweetie, I know how bad a toothache can hurt and it's horrible. You could try some clove oil if you've got any in the house, or if not, bite down on a wet teabag with the sore tooth, the tannin in the teabag helps with the pain. Sometimes ice helps, try holding an ice cube next to the sore tooth. I hope you manage to get an appointment tomorrow, there's nothing worse than toothache.
And yes, you can get a cavity in a tooth that already has a filling in it, either a new cavity in a "clean" bit of tooth, or more decay around and underneath the filling that's already there.

Reply:You've already taken Ibuprofen...there's not much more you can do. Ice your jaw maybe to numb it a bit. Tylenol 3 if you have any. Sounds like you need root canal like I did last week. I worried for nothing though as the root canal was almost painless and it took away the toothache very quickly....good luck to you.

If you have swelling of your jaw or mouth and a temperature, perhaps your mother could take you to urgent care you may need an antibiotic. Hope these suggestions help.

Reply:You're going to have to trust me with this one! Do you trust me?? Ibuprofen! If you've taken it and it doesn't work, YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN ENOUGH! Some people are so paranoid about taking large doses, but don't be afraid to take four of the 200 mg. pills (I use the soft gels--they go to work faster!) every four hours, or as long as the pain lasts! And SERIOUSLY, if you take it RELIGIOUSLY, you won't have ANY PAIN!! I'm being honest--it's a miracle drug for me! Don't believe the hype that "you'll suffer kidney damage" or some stupid thing!! As long as you have something to eat/drink with it, there won't be a problem! HONESTLY, there is NO NEED TO BE IN PAIN--I took it just before TWO SEPARATE ROOT CANAL SURGERIES, and I NEVER FELT THE PAIN, if I took four every four hours! You gotta trust me on this, okay?? I know you're only 14, but tell your parents that my father has been a doctor for over fifty years, and he hasn't led me wrong yet!! You don't need to suffer from the toothache pain! Please, at least just try it!!
Reply:God, and always on the weekend, too, right? We never get a toothache on a Tuesday when you can hop in the car and get it fixed in half an hour. Listen... try hot or cold water first. Find out which one your tooth does not react to. When you find which one, then slosh that water around in your mouth whenever the tooth starts to scream at you.This way you can scream back at it a little. Hot or cold water will help you buy a little time, which is what you need right now. Something which I found helped me was to wad up some Kleenex and get your cheek away from the tooth. Your cheek is warm and that is keeping the tooth hot and that might by why it has so much to say. So - isolate your tooth from your cheek. Listerine tastes awful, but it has a numbing effect to some extent on toothaches. If you can stand the taste for a couple of seconds, try that. What else? As strange as this sounds, I have managed to get two teeth to shut up by squeezing hard on them, slowly and firmly. When I let up, the tooth lets up, too. You have from now until sunset or when you go to bed, to get something into place so you can get a good night's sleep. I wish you all the luck in the world finding someone who can help you nail this one. I have been there and I can honestly tell you I know what you are going through right this minute. Reply:There is probably a tiny hole somewhere in the sore tooth and the root or nerve is infected (that's what happened to me).
Ask your mum if there's any Whisky or similar and swill your mouth out with it (It won't be enough to get you drunk!).
You can take a LITTLE over the recommended dose of pain killer if it's very bad without it harming you.
If you can find the hole that is causing the pain try to cover it with cotton wool, tissue or blu-tak this will stop air getting to it and will take the edge off the pain to last until the morning.
If your Mum has any sleeping pills you might try one.
I hope some of this will help you get trough tonight, I know how awful it must be.

Unless you want a nice sharp pain....the clove oil and toothing gel will numb it.
Wet a flannel and microwave it, tie it in a tesco bag, wrap another thin towel round it and press this against your face....trust me, i had tooth ache so bad it went from my neck to my ear, all the way up to the top of my head!!!
I nearly passed out and had to be taken to hospital

Please tell me how I can get rid of this pain, even just for a little while..........
REALLY bad toothache - please help?
I have the same problem with my tooth that has a filling. It hurts one day and not the next. I think it could be that part of the filling has came out and is causing air to get down in the cavity of the tooth. The filling will probably have to be filled. If you have a heating pad that really helps if you lay your cheeck on it. And if you don't have a heating pad, then get a wet wash cloth and put it in the microwave for about 45 seconds. The heat will really help. About the ibuprofen, assuming I don't know how much of it you took, it is safe to take 4 tablets of ibuprofen which equals 800mg. That is prescription strength in which a doctor would prescribe for pain. Not anymore than that though in a 12 hour period. Hope your pain eases.

His research shows this procedure works by sending rubbing impulses along the nerve pathways that the toothache pain would normally travel on. Oil up with oil of cloves. People have been using this over-the-counter remedy for many years, says Richard Shepard, D.D.S., a retired dentist in Durango, Colorado. Most drugstores carry tiny bottles of the oil. Drop a little directly onto the tooth, or dab a little on a cotton ball and pack the elixir next to the ache.
Don't bite. If the toothache is caused by a blow to the tooth, try not to use that area when you eat, says Dr. Corn. If nothing is damaged, rest for the tooth may restore its vitality.
Suck on some ice. Treat the problem like any good bruise. Use ice, says Dr. Corn. Put ice on the aching tooth or the nearest cheek for 15-minute intervals at least three or four times a day.
Keep your mouth shut. If cold air moving past the tooth is a problem, just shut off the flow, says Roger P. Levin, D.D.S., president of the Baltimore Academy of General Dentistry and a guest lecturer for the University of Maryland.
Or keep your mouth open. Some toothaches happen when a person's bite isn't quite right. In that case, says Dr. Levin, avoid shutting your mouth as much as possible until the dentist can take a look.
Swallow your aspirin. Don't believe that old-time remedy calling for placing an aspirin directly on the aching gum. This can cause an aspirin burn, says Dr. Taintor. For pain relief, take an aspirin every 4 to 6 hours as required.
Stay cool. Keep heat away from your aching cheek even if it makes the toothache feel better, warns Dr. Corn. "If it is an infection, the heat will draw the infection to the outside of the jaw and make the infection worse."

Reply:You can try Orajel cream, it will relieve the pain but only for a short time, and it will make your mouth numb. You pretty much just have to be patient until you go see the dentist, unless you just drink nyquil and sleep the day/night away.
Reply:Put some ground cloves around the tooth. And yes, you can have your cavity grow under the filling or get a new cavity in the same tooth.
Reply:Ouch, sorry you're in so much pain sweetie, I know how bad a toothache can hurt and it's horrible. You could try some clove oil if you've got any in the house, or if not, bite down on a wet teabag with the sore tooth, the tannin in the teabag helps with the pain. Sometimes ice helps, try holding an ice cube next to the sore tooth. I hope you manage to get an appointment tomorrow, there's nothing worse than toothache.
And yes, you can get a cavity in a tooth that already has a filling in it, either a new cavity in a "clean" bit of tooth, or more decay around and underneath the filling that's already there.

Reply:You've already taken Ibuprofen...there's not much more you can do. Ice your jaw maybe to numb it a bit. Tylenol 3 if you have any. Sounds like you need root canal like I did last week. I worried for nothing though as the root canal was almost painless and it took away the toothache very quickly....good luck to you.

Reply:I know this sounds gross but you can place aspirin on the spot where its throbbing or get toilet paper a wet it with hot water(make sure its a thick piece and bite down on it. Ummmm or go to your local drug store and get a toothache gel that will numb your tooth once you rub it arond the area.

Reply:If you have a cavity, eat on the opposite side of your mouth, try to keep air out of your mouth, don't eat real warm or cold things.
If you have swelling of your jaw or mouth and a temperature, perhaps your mother could take you to urgent care you may need an antibiotic. Hope these suggestions help.

Reply:You're going to have to trust me with this one! Do you trust me?? Ibuprofen! If you've taken it and it doesn't work, YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN ENOUGH! Some people are so paranoid about taking large doses, but don't be afraid to take four of the 200 mg. pills (I use the soft gels--they go to work faster!) every four hours, or as long as the pain lasts! And SERIOUSLY, if you take it RELIGIOUSLY, you won't have ANY PAIN!! I'm being honest--it's a miracle drug for me! Don't believe the hype that "you'll suffer kidney damage" or some stupid thing!! As long as you have something to eat/drink with it, there won't be a problem! HONESTLY, there is NO NEED TO BE IN PAIN--I took it just before TWO SEPARATE ROOT CANAL SURGERIES, and I NEVER FELT THE PAIN, if I took four every four hours! You gotta trust me on this, okay?? I know you're only 14, but tell your parents that my father has been a doctor for over fifty years, and he hasn't led me wrong yet!! You don't need to suffer from the toothache pain! Please, at least just try it!!
Reply:God, and always on the weekend, too, right? We never get a toothache on a Tuesday when you can hop in the car and get it fixed in half an hour. Listen... try hot or cold water first. Find out which one your tooth does not react to. When you find which one, then slosh that water around in your mouth whenever the tooth starts to scream at you.This way you can scream back at it a little. Hot or cold water will help you buy a little time, which is what you need right now. Something which I found helped me was to wad up some Kleenex and get your cheek away from the tooth. Your cheek is warm and that is keeping the tooth hot and that might by why it has so much to say. So - isolate your tooth from your cheek. Listerine tastes awful, but it has a numbing effect to some extent on toothaches. If you can stand the taste for a couple of seconds, try that. What else? As strange as this sounds, I have managed to get two teeth to shut up by squeezing hard on them, slowly and firmly. When I let up, the tooth lets up, too. You have from now until sunset or when you go to bed, to get something into place so you can get a good night's sleep. I wish you all the luck in the world finding someone who can help you nail this one. I have been there and I can honestly tell you I know what you are going through right this minute. Reply:There is probably a tiny hole somewhere in the sore tooth and the root or nerve is infected (that's what happened to me).
Ask your mum if there's any Whisky or similar and swill your mouth out with it (It won't be enough to get you drunk!).
You can take a LITTLE over the recommended dose of pain killer if it's very bad without it harming you.
If you can find the hole that is causing the pain try to cover it with cotton wool, tissue or blu-tak this will stop air getting to it and will take the edge off the pain to last until the morning.
If your Mum has any sleeping pills you might try one.
I hope some of this will help you get trough tonight, I know how awful it must be.

Unless you want a nice sharp pain....the clove oil and toothing gel will numb it.
Wet a flannel and microwave it, tie it in a tesco bag, wrap another thin towel round it and press this against your face....trust me, i had tooth ache so bad it went from my neck to my ear, all the way up to the top of my head!!!

Mother, in her late teens or early twenties, also has a two yo and infant in tow. Mother gets mad at the two yo's behavior and smacks him upside the head/face and halfway across the waiting room. Friend is so shocked that she says, "you could have hurt him." Mother says, "f@ck you, he's my kid and you can't tell me what to do." This is a factual situation, nothing made up and probably not uncommon. How can anyone say that paying for a woman to reproduce and raise children in this manner is anything but wrong?

This happens to be an extreme case -- not all welfare recipients act in this manner. Welfare does help a lot of needy and underprivileged people.

I am pissed at the procedure I had today! Does this sound normal to you?????
I had an abcessed tooth. My wisdom tooth. I made an emergency appt. last week and today they extracted it! This dentist had an office that looked like a closet. The receptionist was the dental assistant. The dentist gave me one shot of novacaine and waited for about 8 minutes. He proceeded to "rock" my tooth from side to side with a 'forceps' and of course I felt the pressure. He gave me one more shot of novacaine.
Then my tooth had a HUGE black hole in it from the decay (gross I know) So it crumbled right away.
Then he started to drill my tooth in half so he could get it out 1 root at a time.
One more shot of novacaine.
3 in all.
Now I can take ALOT of pain I have had 2 C-sections! This shyte hurt like no other.
My appt. was at 3pm I got there 10 minutes early, we started right away.
I did not get out until 4:37pm.
When the first root came out, I choked on it and they had to sit me up and blood started squirting out of my nose and I almost puked and the tooth came out.

You didn't make it easy for him by allowing your tooth to rot and abscess, which then led to a fracture during the extraction - I'll bet he didn't want it to fracture either. Decay doesn't happen overnight, so I'm guessing that you don't have regular checkups.
Try and take it as an instructive experience which you wouldn't want again. Ask for suggestions from family and friends for a nicer dentist, and start up annual check-ups. At least you'll have a chance of getting in to someone you like should the necessity arise again.

My husband was digging a hole outside, when the shovel handle came back and hit him in the mouth. Now his lower front tooth is loose! We don't have a dentist, or even dental insurance, but is this an emergency? Will the tooth heal by itself?? Please help, I'm very worried!!

It would be best for him to see a dentist; if the tooth doesn't die from the trauma, he may be able to splint the tooth to the two adjacent teeth, giving the loose tooth extra support until its supporting ligaments have time to heal and hopefully the tooth will survive as well. Don't play with or move the tooth excessively, avoid any hard foods or ones that he would have to bite into. Also take an Ibuprofen such as Advil or Motrin 600 mg every 4 to 6 hours; this is to reduce the inflammation and pain, helping the tooth to settle down until you can get an emergency appointment with a dentist.
Additional information: Even without insurance this is a necessary trip to the dentist.
If the tooth can be saved by splinting, it will first need to be x rayed to make sure it isn't fractured; this is about 15 to 20 dollars for a periapical x ray. The exam and office visit for a new patient is about $100.00 then the splinting is approximately $50-100 depending on the dentist and the area. So it could be as little as $220.00 unless the tooth has suffered irreversible nerve damage, then it will require a root canal and a little later a crown with a post and core build up.
First your dentist will want to make sure the tooth tightens up in the socket so it can be retained before proceeding with a root canal and crown, if this is necessary. If the nerve is inflamed due to the trauma, he may treat it with an antibiotic therapy, to help it heal, if at all possible or he may do a pulpotomy removing the nerve giving it time to heal and tighten up before proceeding with the completion of the root canal and then the crown.
The least is about the $220.00 for the splinting and the highest would be about $1500.00 to $1800.00 for the root canal and crown. You may be able to set up a payment plan for either, again this will depend upon the dentist and his office policy. I wouldn't advise waiting on having this tooth examined; its possible it can be saved with minor treatment or it may be inevitable that it will demand treatment later with a good deal of pain from an abscess or fractured tooth that could be avoided.

Just got a root canal done 2 days ago..Some SERIOUS questions..Very nervous..?
Well, I have lot of swelling on that side of the tooth, although I feel little to no pain. I went to the dentist yesterday and they told me to go to the emergency room because i'm guessing the Endodonist wasn't there. They eventually called him and I asked if antibiotics would do the trick, so they told me to wait 72 hours and if it doesn't go down, go to the E.R immediately. I just want to know, what will they do at the E.R, and what could be the cause of this? They gave me amoxocillin 500MG and I've taken 6-7 already and swelling went down slightly, says my mom, but truthfully I can't see any difference in the swelling. My cheek is what is swollen, on the side I got the root canal performed. Please help, as I am very afraid of the doctors, and I don't want my tooth extracted!
I got the amoxocilin at 1 yesterday. The one dentist acted as if it was no big deal, while the other female dentist acted as if I needed to go to the E.R right away. What could the problem be, and worst scenario

After the final treatment your restored tooth should be pain-free, although it may feel sensitive for a few days. Over-the-counter (OTC) painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can be taken to relieve any discomfort. If pain or swelling remains after this time you should return to your dentist.
A restored tooth or crown should last for many years without further treatment, as long as you maintain good oral hygiene and visit your dentist as soon as possible if any pain or complications arise.
Root canal treatment is usually very successful. However, if the infection comes back the treatment can be repeated. The alternative is to have the tooth out. Once the pulp is destroyed, it can’t heal and it is not recommended to leave an infected tooth in the mouth. Although some people would prefer an extraction, it is usually best to keep as many natural teeth as possible.
What are the risks?
It's unlikely that you will have any further problems following root canal treatment. However, if your tooth does become infected again, your dentist can repeat the procedure, although the rate of success is reduced with subsequent treatments. Very occasionally after root canal treatment, you will still have inflammation at the tip of your tooth. You may need to have a procedure called an apicectomy to remove the root tip.

If the tooth is dead, the root should not be causing pain. It sounds like an abscess, but like I said, it you've already had the root canal, your dentist should have seen it.

If it doesnt I would suggest going to the ER, just to have it checked anyway, to be safe. They may do an x-ray, to see whats going on..probably have an oral surgeon look at it. But I wouldnt panic...it may be something innocent...but dont let it go, if it doesnt improve. Have you tried cool compresses?

I have an abscess which is causing me excrushiating pain. I have been unable to sleep for 15 hours, I've tried paracetamol, clove oil, salt water....is there anything else I can try to relief the pain. I can't get to a dentist for 5 days. If you get any severe facial swelling, turn up to a dentist or your hospital A %26amp; E on the spot. this could be very dangerous, sometimes fatal if left.

Dental problem please help!!?
My male friend is driving me crazy, the past few weeks he has been getting very bad tooth ache. He is literally crying with the pain. He went to A and E the other morning and they advised him to go to the dentist and gave him strong pain killers and anti biotics. He says the medication does not help at all, the pain does NOT go away. He is NOT registered with a dentist ( never has been) and he will not ring the dental help line in order to get a new dentist and last time he got through to the emergency number and got an appointment he was too scared and bottled going. Inbetween the bouts of pain, he forgets how bad it is and will not sort out a dentist and he will not clean his teeth either ( which does not help!) I am at my wits end with him, I have run out of advice, so has anyone got anything they can suggest please?

If he's nervous you should find a dentist that will prescribe some kind of valium for him to take, whatever will get him there. You should also explain to him that infections in the mouth, which if he's not going to the dentist and not brushing/flossing he has, can kill you and very quick too. He needs to see an dentist especially if he has any swelling. Swelling in the mouth can close of your airway. Tell him that dentistry has come along way and he needs to take care of this emergency than schedule a complete exam with x-rays and schedule treatment in priority and get back into a cleaning program. Reply:I think this is quite common, for some strange reason people put up with pain which is a lot more intense than the actual pain inflicted by a dentist. The dentist will numb the tooth fill it and it will be over in a matter of minutes but still people are scared. Tell your b/f that he is a woosie, his breath stinks and you are considering your options because he is such a pain. Maybe that will work, or make an appointment for him and take him yourself, dentist receptionists are used to people with your problem so you should not feel like an idiot when you explain. Best of luck but the bottom line is it is up to your b/f you cannot have it done without his input.
Reply:Well, most importantly, this is not your problem. Your friend need to take steps to take care of HIS own health. You can't make him go and you can't make him take care of his tooth. He needs to be responsible for that on his own.\
If your friend is not going to get insurance, he needs to find a local dental school. They will provide low cost/reduced cost dental care for your friend. And, once he makes the appointment, he has to follow through and GO TO THE APPOINTMENT. Let your friend know that the pain is only going to get worse, so he needs to take care of it ASAP.

I went to an ER late one night when all dentists were closed. Alls they do is check it out give you some kinda antobiotic, and some type of pain killer. it coould just be a gum infection from something getting caught inbetween your teeh. But it might not be.
If you dont wanna try the hospital, you can try this stuff they sell at most drug stores called "Anbesol" it numbs the pain away. It works great. I got sensitive teeth and this stuff always save the day for me.

I went to an ER late one night when all dentists were closed. Alls they do is check it out give you some kinda antobiotic, and some type of pain killer. it coould just be a gum infection from something getting caught inbetween your teeh. But it might not be.
If you dont wanna try the hospital, you can try this stuff they sell at most drug stores called "Anbesol" it numbs the pain away. It works great. I got sensitive teeth and this stuff always save the day for me.

you need to floss also and yes you can get rid of gingivitis by yourself as long as that is all it is. Flossing atleast once a day helps to remove food particles and bacteria inbetween the teeth..Brushing and Rinsing CANNOT do that. you also need to brush atleast 2x/day. You can call around at dental offices to see if they take your insurnce and if they do most offices have Emergency Appointments available same day So you should call if you are that worried..Good Luck

If your gums are inflamed, red and swollen around the teeth, you have a gum disease, most common is Gingivitis. Use strong salt water to rinse, three or more time a day, strong is one level teaspoon to a half cup of waem water, your gums will heal. I'm 66 and still have 27 of my teeth out of 32. I have spent around $40,000.00 in dental over the last 43 years. People with false teeth will tell you, there is nothing like your real teeth.

HElP! im in so much pain.?
ineed a molar pulled like rihjt now. itss infected im sure, its broken. everything i drink ot put in my mouth is going right to the nerve.its been about 3 wks or so since it started. my question is: i do not have health insurance and if i go to the emergency room, can they help? is there usualy a dentist there? im in a very tight bind financialy, i have 2 kids, %26amp; im in an abusive marriage that im tryin to get out of, i say this cuz he doesnt want me to work %26amp; we just cant afford to go to a dentist. im dying in pain. i am taking like 1600 mgs of ibubrophen every 3 hrs. its not helping anymore. should i go to the e.r? i dont know what else to do.

This is Lolly and we have typed to each other before. I hope your other problems we discussed are getting rectified. I know it's hard but you can do it. I am so sorry to not have answered sooner as I have been through that kind of pain many times. The ER will do nothing except to tell you to go to a dentist. You can call an emergency dental clinic that should take you but they are usually located in an inner city. They just pull the tooth and that's it. They don't do other dental work. Look in your phone book. You need to be on an antibiotic right away. That's way too long to suffer with that. I think if you even called the Welfare they could give you the number of a place too. There are some free clinics out there. You are overdosing on ibuprophen. I know how bad the pain is but do not do this . It is dangerous take it properly. You can use some whiskey or oral gel to rub on your gums and around the tooth or take a clove and let it sit on top of the tooth for awhile. Make sure you get an antibiotic. The infection can even go to your heart. I feel badly for you and you DO need help ASAP. Good luck and I care. I hope this helps you. Tylenol #3 with codeine didn't even help me. I do have insurance and I think it's an atrocity that anyone that lives in the USA should be turned down anywhere for healthcare. I hope that changes when we get a new President.
I am still waiting on eye surgery. I had an abrasion on top of all the problems and that has to heal. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I pray that you got some help by now.

Ok so I had a lower molar extracted 5 days ago and after the 3rd day it still seemed to hurt pretty bad but i thought maybe it was just because the tooth was very hard to get out. The 4th day, yesterday, it started to be EXCRUSIATING plus I started to see a bit of white shoing on the side of my gums where the tooth was pulled and it now has become jagged and sharp and it's cutting the **** out of the side of my tongue! it hurts bad! So I'm wondering what in the world that is...PLUS, I went to the emergency room last night because of the pain being so bad and the dentist being closed for the holiday and the emergency room didnt have much to say but it didnt look infected. they gave me 2 Perkasets and a Rx for Vicodin. The pain is SO much better. I was thinking I have dry socket but I hear that pain killers do not help the pain of dry socket at all, so maybe that not what the problem is? And I also would like to know what the jagged little white thing is that just appeared in my gum. TY!

Probably a piece of the tooth. It is very common for the dentist to have to remove the tooth in pieces. And sometimes they miss a tiny piece. I know it doesn't feel tiny, but it really is. Call the dentist and make an appointment to go in. He/she can pull that little piece out with no pain at all. They can take another xray to make sure they got it all. Shouldn't cost you anything more because it's related to the extraction. So no worries. That pain could be that piece of tooth working it's way out. But see the dentist to make sure.

I know that sounds really bad but a chip of bone will work out just like a chip of tooth. It is more than likely tooth though. See your dentist, you may need to have that socket packed.

The jagged edge can be either a small piece of tooth, a calculus spur that may have been on the tooth prior to extraction and has not fallen into the socket area and become an irritant, or a bone spur which is a jagged edge of bone on the area surrounding the tooth and is now noticeable since the tooth is gone. At any rate, a dentist needs to follow-up, even on a holiday weekends they MUST have an answering service or phone # where they can be reached, that is the law. Emergency rooms are good for a little meds to hold you over until you get to see your dentist, Emergency rooms do not usually perform dental procedures, at least they don't in our area, and the only dentist with hospital rights are Oral Surgeons.

I have a hole in my front tooth. What could it be?
A couple days ago I was brusing my teeth and I noticed a small hole at the bottom of my tooth (the first molar on the bottom) near my gums. I do go to the dentist regularly (every 6 months) and I already had a dentist appointment scheduled for 2 weeks from now. There's no pain, but I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas about what caused this and what can be done and basically what to expect when I go to the dentist. Is it serious? Should I schedule an emergency appointment?

Okay here's the deal, my lower wisdom teeth are both decayed badly and my two upper last molars are both chipped one to the gumline and the other nearly to the gumline, my first and second lower molars are both chipped on one side to the gumline and i have deep cavity in my front tooth that needs a root canal.
Only problem is i have no insurance and i am in horrible pain. I am lucky to get in 4 hours of sleep a night. I was wondering if anyone in the MN area knew of any dentist that would bill their patients in a emergency like mine? I can't even eat i have been drinking soup for about a month and a half now and no dentist seems to show any mercy to me.
I also tried applying for government insurance but was told the wait is 8-10 weeks even with a medical emergency! I need help someone please help me.
Any suggestion or home remedies that work will be greatly appreciated

If your over 18 years of age, you might want to check into a credit card and go that way. Otherwise, your just going to have to use over the counter remedies. Like gum ointment etc..... Advil----etc........

They may even do the work at the hospital! Or they may give you pain meds and then have you follow up with a dentist, but I don't know how it would go from there.
Reply:Appart from normal pain killers and anti inflammatories such as ibuprofen, and panadeine (you can take both of these at the same time), try popping some clove oil onto the affected areas with a cotton bud, its meant to knumb the region so there is less pain. Also for times when it gets pretty bad, there are some mouth washes out there with added anaesthetics like lignocaine that can knumb the pain as well.... it might actually help with any infection as well, however it doesnt last very long. Sorry i cant help more.
Reply:Try some Orajel(get the maximum strength Gel, it's more of a loose gel and will spread almost like a liquid). If I were you, I'd go to the closest dental school at the closest college or university and get some treatment. They will charge you on a sliding scale, so it will be real cheap.

Is the injection you get in tooth sore?
I am going to the emergency dept in the hospital to see a dentist as i have never felt pain in my life like this before! i have a hole in my tooth and my gum is red and throbing.
The problem being i am terrified, i have a fear of injections. i have not been to the dentist scince i was 12 i am now 25 so you can tell how scared i am!
Also not too keen as it will be the NHS i have heard they are butchers?
What i am really wanting to know in all honesty is how sore is the injection? and what does it feel like?

Like you i HATE injections - have been known to scream before the dentist has touched me!!!
But i can also say that the thought of it is always worse than the actual injection. The NHS dentist is no worse than a private one. Also if you try and relax, shut your eyes and take deep breaths it helps. I ususally pray at that point. You can also tell the dentist your fear (if he/she cant see it in your eyes), and they will be reassuring.

It is also possible that you are in severe tooth pain you may not even feel the shot. Most of the time I feel very little if nothing. Just focus on something. I like to focus on the instructions that the doctor gives me. When I focus on that it keeps my mind occupied and I am too busy to notice too much else. By the way I know how you feel. I very very nervous shots.

The problem being i am terrified, i have a fear of injections. i have not been to the dentist scince i was 12 i am now 25 so you can tell how scared i am!
Also not too keen as it will be the NHS i have heard they are butchers?

Like you i HATE injections - have been known to scream before the dentist has touched me!!!
But i can also say that the thought of it is always worse than the actual injection. The NHS dentist is no worse than a private one. Also if you try and relax, shut your eyes and take deep breaths it helps. I ususally pray at that point. You can also tell the dentist your fear (if he/she cant see it in your eyes), and they will be reassuring.

Medicine in dentistry?
In general dentistry, you take the same basic science classes as physicians. After school you can opt in dentistry to do a general practice residency. In this 1-2 year program, you go through medical grand rounds, work in a hospital as a dentist, and complete rotations in internal medicine, emergency medicine, anethesiology, endoscopy and head and neck trauma. How much to you think a program like this would help with understanding overall traditional systemic medicine? Would that be beneficial in dentistry?

Continued: So my temp came down with the bath and some tylenol. I sweated out the fever, but the tooth site was beginning to swell and today now I can see a whitish goo over the extraction site. My dentist is hopeless because she has no emergency # and I couldn't get in touch with her all weekend. I can't wait to tell her goodbye for ever!

Problems with my daughters space maintainer?
My daughter has a space maintainer on the bottom. Where it meets her teeth in the front she has a loose tooth. there is a small lump behind the loose tooth, the lump is on either side of the wire from her spacer. It is causing her a substantial amountof pain. We can't get in to see our dentist because I beleive she is away on vacation, there is no mention of a dentist on call on the recording at our dentists office. She will probably not be back until next week at the earliest. My question is : Do I take her to the emergency room, or wait it out for the dentist. Is it safe if the wire from her spacer is cutting right into that lump? there is no open sore, it's not bleeding.

New filling just fell out - what do I do?
I had a cavity filled on Tuesday (the 20th). I had already had a previous cavity in this tooth filled with amalgam, and my dentist removed this filling, removed the cavity, and replaced it with a composite filling. I noticed that this new filling has chipped and fallen out, leaving a large gap on the occusal surface of my first molar. The gap is dark in colour, leading me to beleive that there is still amalgam in the tooth (there is no way I developed massive decay in one day) where the composite was laid.
Obviously I am calling my dentist first thing tomorrow to schedule an emergency appointment, but is there anything I can do to protect my tooth in the meantime? Since discovering the hole I have been genty brushing it regularily, and using a needle-less syringe to flush it with fluoride-containing listerine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am getting my wisdom teeth out on friday, so this needs to be resolved before then.

I am not sure what to say to you, since you are knowledgeable on all this stuff, apparently. I would say that you should go to the drug store or grogery and get whatever temorary filling product they have available and apply it per instruction.
IF there is still amalgam present, I would bring this to the attention of the dentist, as this is not "quality" dentistry. Beyond that, I do not know the depth or severity of the cavity and cannot answer how it would affect your forthcoming extractions on Friday.

Especially with you having an appointment for the extraction on Friday. The dentist will want to take care of this first, not on the same day as surgery.
Occasionally the composite restorations fall out as yours has done, it's usually due to moisture contamination when it was placed. Maybe you remember if they had a hard time keeping your mouth dry, it's probably a lower molar tooth, if so that was the case. The dentist may have to put a little more undercut into the prep to help with retention. It doesn't sound like it was a large one since you didn't mention any pain. What your seeing is the amalgam in the tooth that has stained the dentin tubules, referred to as an "amalgam tattoo," it doesn't cause any problem as long as the decay was removed. Keep in mind that the prep area is going to look darker or more yellow because the enamel has been removed, so you are looking at the dentin in the tooth. Hope I've been of some help, just get it fixed tomorrow and it won't happen again. Take care!

Okay, assuming there is no pain:
If the tooth is cracked all the way that you can see inside of the tooth and there is NO pain or swelling --%26gt; Pulp necrosis. Treatment for necrotic pulp is root canal, post/core and crown if the tooth is restorable.
If the tooth is cracked alittle or half way, and there is NO pain or decay --%26gt; treatment would be restorative filling or crown, assuming the tooth is vital (your dentist will determine that)
If you grind teeth at night, get a mouth guard. It’s cheap.
If it is necrotic pulpitis, you should see a detnsit soon. Necrotic pulpitis will lead to acute apical abscess: These cases you could have a throbbing, pulsating pressure pain, cellulitis, orofacial abscess, infection, fever and again PAIN.

The tooth is only dead if you have had a root canal done to it, which destroys and removes the tissues in the root of the tooth.

I went in for a root canal. The dentist thought it could be saved. etc. I was suppose to get it crowned they looked at my mouth and because of a potential problem got a bridge. After having the perm. bridge placed, a couple of days later the pain started. It was throbbing (the worst pain imaginable). I called they said to take antibiotics %26amp; called in Loritab. Nothing eased my pain, I had an ice pack on the whole time. I had to get the dentist in town to see me Sat. at 10pm to numb my mouth. I called the my dentist %26amp; he adjusted my bite on Sun. I was crying hysterically all the way home in pain, I went to the E.R. the nice dentist met me %26amp; numbed me again. Monday I wasn't going back. The nice dentist referred me to an Endodontist. He did emergency draining on that tooth %26amp; 1 other both dentists now say I still need a root canal and the bridge was shotty with posible decay under it. Next day extraction of a wisdom tooth next to the root canal tooth. It's been awful! Advice.

There is no way to disinfect a root canal. No matter how clean the area is or how free of bacteria, there are always bacteria in the tubules and they will grow. And, the more antibiotics taken or applied, the more antibiotic resistant, and stronger, they will become.
Root canals are the most toxic most damaging procedure dentists can do. You have two options: a root canal or an extraction. Dentists usually fill root canals with gutta percha. How do I get my money back after I go for a root canal don't recieve one, the bridge is shotty, %26amp; Pain.?
I would ask them first, if they decline hire a lawyer (if it is worth it to you).
Dentists pay a small fortune in malpractice insurance and would likely just refund you if you explained you needed the money to repair their work.

I think you need a change of dentist and go on the talk of others that know the person!! You know like a walking portfolio of patients!!! I say if your going to try to get something out of it your going to have to get yourself a lawyer and hope for the best!!! If not, then you might have to learn from the mistake and find someone that is good and eat the price from the first one!!!

There is no way to disinfect a root canal. No matter how clean the area is or how free of bacteria, there are always bacteria in the tubules and they will grow. And, the more antibiotics taken or applied, the more antibiotic resistant, and stronger, they will become.
Root canals are the most toxic most damaging procedure dentists can do. You have two options: a root canal or an extraction. Dentists usually fill root canals with gutta percha. Some use the Sargenti method, a popular treatment used by 25% of dentists, but denounced by the American Dental Association because it contains formaldehyde compounds. There have been a lot of problems with those. They used to contain lead. The current formulas are said to have removed the lead, but millions of root canal treatments using the old formulas are still in people's mouths. Gutta percha is 15% barium so that it will show up in the X-ray. Gutta percha shrinks and leaves gaps and the tooth can never be sterile. There is no such thing as a sterile root canal. During a root canal, the main canal is filled and possibly some of the small side canals, but the other smaller canal-like structures in teeth called dentinal tubules are too tiny to be filled during treatment and these tubules become home to bacteria instead. Since there are millions of these tubules there is room for enough bacteria to challenge the immune system. The waste products from these nasty germs include some very toxic substances called thio-ethers, and your body has to deal with these toxins 24 hours a day. They contaminate the bone around the tooth and they are picked up by the immune system and carried to the liver for detoxification. Unfortunately, the liver can be seriously damaged by them. GM Yes. No matter what material or technique is used - and this is just as true today - the root filling shrinks minutely, perhaps microscopically. Further and this is key - the bulk of solid appearing teeth, called the dentin, actually consists of miles of tiny tubules. Microscopic organisms lurking in the maze of tubules simply migrate into the interior of the tooth and set up housekeeping. A filled root seems to be a favorite spot to start a new colony.

Dentists??Have I been done?
I had two fillings last night, but they don't match the diagram they gave me last time I went. The diagram labelled 2 'C's (composite fillings) on one upper back tooth. However, I had a filling in one tooth on each side (upper back).
Also, afterwards, the dentist said he had to drill so far down that he could see the nerve. He said he was surprised at this. He said if I had any pain in that tooth that I should return as a matter of emergency for him to remove the nerve.
Has he just drilled too far and is trying to cover his back?
He ALSO said, on my first visit, that it looks like I eat too much sugar. I don't. He changed his mind on my second visit to say that at some point in my life I have eaten too much sugar. Why the change of story?
He says I need three further fillings. I have a little sensitiviy in 2 of these teeth so I am inclined to believe him, but I'm not sure I want to go back there again!!
What if he's given me a filling in the wrong tooth?

I would go and see a 2nd consultant.

however sometimes when doing a filling %26amp; removing decay in the tooth sometimes the decay can be far down %26amp; close to the nerve, find out if your dentist put a lining in your tooth before the filling as this helps to protect your nerve. If you have a silver filling this can conduct hot %26amp; cold, so maybe your dentist was just warning you incase you have any problems with the tooth (try avoid eating very hot or cold things for about a week). hope this helps
