Well, I have lot of swelling on that side of the tooth, although I feel little to no pain. I went to the dentist yesterday and they told me to go to the emergency room because i'm guessing the Endodonist wasn't there. They eventually called him and I asked if antibiotics would do the trick, so they told me to wait 72 hours and if it doesn't go down, go to the E.R immediately. I just want to know, what will they do at the E.R, and what could be the cause of this? They gave me amoxocillin 500MG and I've taken 6-7 already and swelling went down slightly, says my mom, but truthfully I can't see any difference in the swelling. My cheek is what is swollen, on the side I got the root canal performed. Please help, as I am very afraid of the doctors, and I don't want my tooth extracted!
I got the amoxocilin at 1 yesterday. The one dentist acted as if it was no big deal, while the other female dentist acted as if I needed to go to the E.R right away. What could the problem be, and worst scenario
Just got a root canal done 2 days ago..Some SERIOUS questions..Very nervous..?
See below:
After the final treatment your restored tooth should be pain-free, although it may feel sensitive for a few days. Over-the-counter (OTC) painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can be taken to relieve any discomfort. If pain or swelling remains after this time you should return to your dentist.
A restored tooth or crown should last for many years without further treatment, as long as you maintain good oral hygiene and visit your dentist as soon as possible if any pain or complications arise.
Root canal treatment is usually very successful. However, if the infection comes back the treatment can be repeated. The alternative is to have the tooth out. Once the pulp is destroyed, it can’t heal and it is not recommended to leave an infected tooth in the mouth. Although some people would prefer an extraction, it is usually best to keep as many natural teeth as possible.
What are the risks?
It's unlikely that you will have any further problems following root canal treatment. However, if your tooth does become infected again, your dentist can repeat the procedure, although the rate of success is reduced with subsequent treatments. Very occasionally after root canal treatment, you will still have inflammation at the tip of your tooth. You may need to have a procedure called an apicectomy to remove the root tip.
Hope this helps!
Reply:I've had a few root canals, and before the dental treatment I had swelling and pain as you've described.
If the tooth is dead, the root should not be causing pain. It sounds like an abscess, but like I said, it you've already had the root canal, your dentist should have seen it.
I'd stay on this, because it does sound like something is wrong. Watch for fever. Hope you feel better soon!
Reply:Wow, so long question :)
First of all: "One treatment for an abscessed root is to extract it, thereby removing the source of infection. However, in select cases root canal therapy may be able save the tooth by cleaning the source of infection in the pulp chamber and root canal system."
There isn't another way. If you want have a healthy smile.
Reply:You should definitely keep taking the antibiotics.
Your dentist owes you an explanation. You shouldn't come away not knowing if this is serious. You should call the office and ask them straight out, is this something that I need to be concerned about or will it go away?
My guess is that after you keep taking the antibiotics it will go down.
Reply:Ive had root canals done before...there shouldnt be any pain at the tooth, because a root canal removes the nerve from that tooth...however, its possible that there is an infection, which should improve with the antibiotics. If it doesnt I would suggest going to the ER, just to have it checked anyway, to be safe. They may do an x-ray, to see whats going on..probably have an oral surgeon look at it. But I wouldnt panic...it may be something innocent...but dont let it go, if it doesnt improve. Have you tried cool compresses?

Can anyone answer my dental question?
I don't have a regular dentist right now but have toothaches in two teeth. Would most dentists be willing to squeeze you in on an emergency basis and do two extractions at your request on the same day as your phone call?
Can anyone answer my dental question?
yes, most will but it will probably be costly as they will consider it to be an emergency situation.
Reply:That guy living in a cardboard box with ripped up clothing. Offer him the money for on the spot dental work; afterall he's missing a few teeth he must have experience pulling his own. He has more training then most every dentist if he's done the operation on himself ;) .
Reply:Probably not. Your best bet would be an emergency dental clinic. You could call a nearby dentist, explain the situation, and ask for advice. Also, how do you know you need an extraction? Could be a bad cavity or something else. Get checked out.

I've got a wisdom tooth?
that i can see into in the back of my mouth i'm thinking i should probably just go ahead and yank it or perform emergency surgery myself since i can't afford the dentist. i'm thinking i should get nice and drunk then yank the thing.
I've got a wisdom tooth?
If your wisdom tooth isn't hurting you, there is absolutely no reason to pull it out. If it is hurting you, go see a dentist. Wisdom teeth can't just be pulled out. They have to be surgically removed because of where they are in your mouth. This is not something you can do yourself. You'll wind up with a lot more pain and have an emergency visit to the dentist to remove what you couldn't get. Also, any time you have a tooth removed, you must have antibiotics because your mouth is a great place for germs to grow. Removing a tooth leaves an opening for bacteria to invade your bloodstream. Trust me, sepsis isn't any fun!
Here are some suggestions: look in your phone book for your area's public health district. If they don't provide low-cost dental care, they know who does. If there is an oral surgery or dental school in your area, they may give you a reduced price if you let a student work on you. Also, many oral surgeons will work with you on payment options. One I visited told me about a program that's basically a low-interest loan for dental work. They work with you so you have monthly payments you can afford. If you still don't think you can afford it, call your friends and family. See if any of them will help you out. If they won't, call up your local churches and see if they can help or know someone who will.
Hang in there! Look around for your options first before you try to take it out yourself!
Reply:Probably not a good idea. If it isnt hurting you than you dont really need to do anything. If it is hurting you than you should go to the dentist. Check out someplace like western dental or some low cost place. Good Luck!
Reply:NO! Do NOT yank the tooth out yourself. This will be extremely painful, even when drunk, and can cause infection and serious complexities. If you can see it, it is already too late to remove it by yourself. You will just incur a forced visit to the dentist (and maybe even doctor), further denting your pocket.
If you cannot afford it, do not do anything about it. It is not an ailment that absolutely needs to be treated. In the past, people did not yank the wisdom teeth, and they have no adverse affect other than "pushing" your other teeth and being uncomfortable.
Get it professionally done when you can actually afford it. It does not make much of a difference to do it now or later. This is not an emergency, and it is much better left alone.
Reply:If this is what you are thinking, it is clear that your tooth is the only piece of wisdom in your whole head.

Tooth abscess - SEVERE pain - HELP!!?
I have an abscess which is causing me excrushiating pain. I have been unable to sleep for 15 hours, I've tried paracetamol, clove oil, salt water....is there anything else I can try to relief the pain. I can't get to a dentist for 5 days. Does this warrent an emergency? should I go to hospital or just wait for my appointment?
Tooth abscess - SEVERE pain - HELP!!?
Okay, for *Mojo*, Panadeine Forte is not available without prescription in Australia or anywhere else. And for Audrey, hospitals DO have emergency services for dental pain.
My advice is however, go to your local after-hours doctor. It may cost extra but they will be able to put you on a strong antibiotic to relieve the pain by reducing the severity of the abscess, along with a pain killer to tide you over until you can get to your dentist, just don't over do the pain meds, if two don't work, four won't either.
Book that appointment with a dentist regardless of the wait, tell them to put you on their cancellation list, you may get in earlier. You need to be treated as soon as possible. If you get any severe facial swelling, turn up to a dentist or your hospital A %26amp; E on the spot. this could be very dangerous, sometimes fatal if left.
Reply:Yes, this is an emergency, please phone hospital and see what they say(they may not be able to help you with dental problems depending where you live but it's worth a try) or buy a stronger pain killer such as panadeine forte(if you are Australian) or a painkiller with codeine in it, that will help with the pain.
Edit; Sorry, my mistake, yes Panadeine Forte is only available on script(I just forgot), but something like Neurofen Plus(which contains a smaller amount of codeine and paracetamol) may be available over the counter.
Reply:4 words, "Go To The Dentist"!
you must have been in pain before it got like that. the hospital doesn't take care of teeth.
all i can recommend is Tylenol for the pain, until you get to the dentist.
Reply:Maybe you can go to yr PCP ( primary care phys.), the abcess will only go away w/ antibiotic. Also yr dentist won't be able to do anywork on that teeth until the abcess is down. So in case you get to the dentist, first he will prescribe antibiotic and give you a nother appt. for the work in the next days after yr 1st appt.
Remember, toohache pain can be more excrutiating than labor pain, so run to the dr. Maybe you can explain why you are going when you set up the appt. Good luck
Reply:This is an emergency. Check with your dentist if they dint have emergency appointments set as side. Or contact your GP for antibiotics. It will not give you immediate relief but will make it more bearable within 12 to 24 hours. You will need a root canal or the tooth should be removed
Reply:This is an emergency. You need an extraction. Call your dentist back and ask him to do it or refer you to someone else. An abscess is an infection. You need to have something done. Go in the phone book and look for Oral Surgeons and call everyone until someone takes you today. Don't be afraid to tell them how much pain your in. Good luck

Dental problem please help!!?
My male friend is driving me crazy, the past few weeks he has been getting very bad tooth ache. He is literally crying with the pain. He went to A and E the other morning and they advised him to go to the dentist and gave him strong pain killers and anti biotics. He says the medication does not help at all, the pain does NOT go away. He is NOT registered with a dentist ( never has been) and he will not ring the dental help line in order to get a new dentist and last time he got through to the emergency number and got an appointment he was too scared and bottled going. Inbetween the bouts of pain, he forgets how bad it is and will not sort out a dentist and he will not clean his teeth either ( which does not help!) I am at my wits end with him, I have run out of advice, so has anyone got anything they can suggest please?

He must have a infection in his mouth and trust me ive been thee unless you get proper help from a dentist this will not go away it will get alot worse. Get him to read these answers which you get and he might see sense. He needs a dentist no matter what.
Reply:Hi,like me your boyfriend is terrified of the dentists. This works when i get toothache I use oil of cloves it deadens the nerve. It does not taste very nice you put a dab on the tooth it takes literally minutes to deaden the pain. You can buy it at the chemists.Hope your boyfriend tries it.Good Luck
Reply:well as one who has had similar problem, the only thing you can do is to find one for him, and drag him along, other than that he's on his own. But what he has is an infection, hence the antibiotics and they don;t last for long and it's not advisable to take painkillers for too long either. why don;t you show him the mails and see if he changes his mind, i sympathise with you and HIM.
Reply:He could take Advil or put ice cubes where it hurts. It will make the area numb and he shouldn't feel a thing.you should do something to him like knock him out or chloroform him them bring him to a dentist. If he doesn't go he might never be able to eat anything that he enjoys.
Good Luck!
Reply:It sounds like your friend probably has an infected tooth, but the antibiotics should have helped with the pain a little, after 48hrs of taking them. If he's nervous you should find a dentist that will prescribe some kind of valium for him to take, whatever will get him there. You should also explain to him that infections in the mouth, which if he's not going to the dentist and not brushing/flossing he has, can kill you and very quick too. He needs to see an dentist especially if he has any swelling. Swelling in the mouth can close of your airway. Tell him that dentistry has come along way and he needs to take care of this emergency than schedule a complete exam with x-rays and schedule treatment in priority and get back into a cleaning program. Good luck!
Reply:All of the above answer's are great, but there is still the problem of how to get him to go TO The Dentist.
A Good idea, would be to say to him;
"I wont brush my teeth, if you wont brush your's"
He should realise either How stupid he is being, or will think that 'your hurting yourself' for him and wont stop until he does.
This is an optional answer;
TEll him that you also have the tooth pain and wont try and get rid of it until he gets it checked !
Reply:I think this is quite common, for some strange reason people put up with pain which is a lot more intense than the actual pain inflicted by a dentist. The dentist will numb the tooth fill it and it will be over in a matter of minutes but still people are scared. Tell your b/f that he is a woosie, his breath stinks and you are considering your options because he is such a pain. Maybe that will work, or make an appointment for him and take him yourself, dentist receptionists are used to people with your problem so you should not feel like an idiot when you explain. Best of luck but the bottom line is it is up to your b/f you cannot have it done without his input.
Reply:Well, most importantly, this is not your problem. Your friend need to take steps to take care of HIS own health. You can't make him go and you can't make him take care of his tooth. He needs to be responsible for that on his own.\
If your friend is not going to get insurance, he needs to find a local dental school. They will provide low cost/reduced cost dental care for your friend. And, once he makes the appointment, he has to follow through and GO TO THE APPOINTMENT. Let your friend know that the pain is only going to get worse, so he needs to take care of it ASAP.
Reply:if there is any swelling in the gums it could be a infection. if it is a cavity, get him to gargle with salty water, there is probabaly somethink inside the cavity causing the pain, once it is out the pain should go away, untill he goe's to the dentist and has a professional look at it, he wont be rid of the pain for very long.
Reply:Look for a dentist that does conscious sedations. They can give him some pills to take so he won't know anything that they do.
Reply:He seriously needs to go to the dentist, if he is not careful, he will end up having them all removed. And then being replaced with dentures. Everyone should look after their teeth.

I went to an ER late one night when all dentists were closed. Alls they do is check it out give you some kinda antobiotic, and some type of pain killer. it coould just be a gum infection from something getting caught inbetween your teeh. But it might not be.
If you dont wanna try the hospital, you can try this stuff they sell at most drug stores called "Anbesol" it numbs the pain away. It works great. I got sensitive teeth and this stuff always save the day for me.
hope that helps
Reply:I think its called paradontidus....I would rinse your mouth with a solution of Peroxide and water, Do not swallow!!!..... I'm not a Dentist, but you should deff. contact one...

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!! ANSWER ! thanks ~?
you need to floss also and yes you can get rid of gingivitis by yourself as long as that is all it is. Flossing atleast once a day helps to remove food particles and bacteria inbetween the teeth..Brushing and Rinsing CANNOT do that. you also need to brush atleast 2x/day. You can call around at dental offices to see if they take your insurnce and if they do most offices have Emergency Appointments available same day So you should call if you are that worried..Good Luck
Reply:do the following, rinse good with warm water and hydrogen peroxide, floss, several times aday, take aspirin if you can if not advil every four hours. and see if this helps, and find a dentist to check you out.

you need to floss also and yes you can get rid of gingivitis by yourself as long as that is all it is.
