My friend has a tooth abcess....he received antibiotics from the emergency room a few weeks ago and the swelling and pain went down. But now its back!!! he had his perscription refilled, but its not helping. He went back into the emergency room last night and they only upped his dosage for the medication. Now, this morning, his face is severely swollen!!!! Its hard for him to speak and he is in a lot of pain. Its sunday so the dentists offices are closed, not to mention that he doesn't have health insurance. I don't know what to do to ease his pain. Does anyone know of anything that we could do or that would help at least aid in the swelling and the pain. Obviously he cannot keep going back to the emergency room because they really aren't doing anything for him. Please Help ASAP!!!!!!!!
Tooth Abcess Emergency!!!!!!!!?
In addition to using the pain medication of your choice, sleep on an extra pillow to elevate your head. Sleep on the side that does NOT have a toothache. If that doesn't work, you can move to a recliner or the sofa so you can keep your head really elevated. This will minimize the blood flow to the area and therefore minimize the throbbing and pain. This might help you make it through the night until you can see a dentist.
Reply:Many people treat dental infections lightly, but they should be taken quite seriously!! His only option is to take the antibiotic exactly as prescribed and tomorrow call a dentist. It is very difficult to obtain medications that will reduce the pain because most pain meds are counteracted by the body's infection. It is likely that after his first visit to the ER he was instructed to see a dentist ASAP, meaning the next business day. The antibiotics will only reduce the infection temporarily and he will need either a root canal treatment or the tooth extracted to solve the problem. Root canal treatments can be pricey, while extractions usually only cost a few hundred dollars. Either way, aggressive dental treatment is necessary soon. Dental infections have been known to spread to other parts of the body with time and can be fatal.
Seek dental treatment on Monday!!
