almost every where i go doctors offices ,dentists and so forth i need to give them my kids social security number and it is even asked for on your school papers for emergency info .why do they need it ?we are told to not give it out because of fraud and indentity theft but yet they all ask for this .why do they need it ?
Why do schools need a social security number on your childs emergency contact card?
they dont need it and you DO NOT HAVE to give it to them. They will insist and you need to insist right back. They usually use it to keep track of a patients account, tell them you want a random number applied or use your childs birthdate.
the school nurse cannot use the number for your child without you signing a waiver and why would the nurse do that? Thats what your doctor is for. Call the SSI number or go to their website and you will find this to be true. The ssi office will tell you not to give it out.
Reply:They don't.
In fact refuse ti give it to them. they need to come up with another numbering system. The only thing a SS # is used for is tax purposes. Make up a 9 digit number and use that. but let them know you will not give them the SS#
Reply:Schools do not need it for emergency information. They need it for state account purposes. Students are tracked throughout the state by their social security numbers. The school nurse may use the social security numbers to track down health information from the health database in the state. Schools are very protective of the social security numbers and they are usually kept in a secure location.
If you put a made up social, then you are falsifying information and you could be fined by the school district. Don't listen to people who really don't know!
In the state of Texas, you CAN NOT enroll you child into school without a social security number or an S number that is assigned. Maybe other states have different laws regarding this, but I've turned away 5 kids this year without social security numbers.
Reply:With the new privacy laws you are not required to provide your SS # to anyone. My kids form asked for it and I left it blank. If they need a number then they will phone me I am sure.
Insurance companies and drivers licenses are issuing new numbers so that SS # can remain private.
You do not have to provide it. Doctors and dentists will likely be changing their forms as well.
