Do I go see a dentist or a doctor for this problem...?

I never had my upper-right wisdom tooth removed, even though it came out facing out at my cheek, since it usually never gives me any trouble. Well, somehow, a big gash formed way back there on my cheek, and I think my salivary glands have become infected because I feel a lot of pain under my jaw, quite a ways away from the sore itself, and it hurts to swallow. Is this a problem for a dentist or a doctor? Emergency room, Primary Care Physician, or Endocrinologist? And does anyone have any insight or suggestions for me? It hurrrts! Thanks!

Do I go see a dentist or a doctor for this problem...?
I would see a dentist. Chances are if it IS from your tooth, if you see a doctor he'll tell you to see a dentist for the problem. He'll probably help you for sure, but the main problem (if it's caused by this tooth) will need to be dealt with by the dentist.

I would see a dentist simply because it's dealing with your teeth and mouth. He'll have prescriptions for you to use to help with the pain and probably a topical treatment to put on the sore itself. Plus, if there IS an infection, he'll have the equipment right there to help you, rather than a doctor who would more than likely send you on for an x-ray or something. I would steer away from ER because it's far too expensive! PCP is up to you, but I tend to not trust anyone in those emergency medical clinics - I've been misdiagnosed so many times it isn't even funny.

Check out your dentist, he should be able to help! As far as any suggestions, just take some tylenol and motrin interchangeably every 4-8 hours to try and relieve some of the pain. Good luck!
Reply:go to the dentist first and he will advise you.
Reply:yes- dentist
Reply:Go to the dentist, who will then refer you to an Oral Surgeon.

Get that taken care of quickly too. Infections inside the mouth are not be taken lightly.
Reply:I would go to your doctor first. Call them and explain the problem
Reply:This is a dental problem go see a dentist.
Reply:Go see a dentist. If you need further care they will refer you to the appropriate health care professional.
Reply:At this point I think you should seek medical advice from whomever will see you first. I doubt that it is an endocrinological problem though. See your primary care physician first, them maybe he will send you on to a dental surgeon.
Reply:I worked in a dental office for three years and I heard the dentist talking to patients about wisdom teeth many times. You should go to the dentist ASAP. Infected wisdom teeth should never be left without seeing a proffessional. If there is pain and swelling then they are most likely infected and in rare cases, infected wisdom teeth can be fatal (rare as I said). But, you should see a dentist for sure and he will be able to provide you with the treatment you need. Or at least advise you as to the correct treatment.
Reply:please go to the dentist they do gum and teeth and they all so do surgery on them. go go.
Reply:Well I suggest calling your dentist so he can prescribe a antibiotic. It sounds like you may have an infection or ma by an abscess. in the mean time try gargling with a little peroxide and water mixed or what also works really well to take the pain away is Listerine the brand name stuff not generic that's what I use when I have mouth pain. Good luck oh hey did you get any money from the tooth fairy when they pulled that tooth? (just kidding)
Reply:A dentist that performs oral surgery seems best for this. However, you might want to call your local county Health Dept. and ask them what they recommend. They also may know good dentists/oral surgeons who specialize in this type of problem. Good luck. Hope you feel better very soon.
Reply:It is friday night, go to an emergency room. If it is infected they can get you a prescription for antibiotics.

If it is not infected, they will send you to the appropriate place.
Reply:Go to a dentist, then he/she can reccomend a specialist.

Should I go to a private dentist now for treatment or wait 5 months for an NHS appointment?

I lost a filling from an upper back tooth recently and so have tried to get an NHS emergency appointment as I'm not registered. I've been put on the NHS register but it takes about 4 months to get a dentist here apparently. The emergency service will only do abstrations if people are in pain or cement crowns back in. So I went to a private dentist who told me I needed root canal surgery and a crown which would cost £450 so I booked an appointment for next week but this seems an awful lot of money. I'm not really in any pain with it but he said it would develop into an abcess if not treated soon. Should I go with this guy who seems to be overcharging me or wait until an NHS appointment becomes available which would cost a more affordable £200 if I do need a crown?

Should I go to a private dentist now for treatment or wait 5 months for an NHS appointment?
if u have the money then private is the 1 to go for if not stick to waiting for the 5months but saying that it could most probably be more than 5months
Reply:You found an NHS dentist???

I think I'd stump up and go private this time.

For future reference, why not check out various insurance plans that cover part of the cost of dentistry?

I note that Tesco now offers a dental health insurance policy, but a better general option may be BHSF. (Google it). This covers a number of things including dental work, glasses and so on.
Reply:Go with the private dentist while you are not in pain, this way the treatment will be all done before pain develops, yes it is alot of money but i can tell you it is definately worth it, they do way better treatment than NHS dentists.

Dont wait for the NHS or you will wait forever, get your treatment done next week with the private dentist even though it is alot more expensive i can safely say it is worth it
Reply:The question is: If I wait do I risk loosing the tooth? The answer is dependent on how damaged the tooth is...As for the fee you have been quoted, shop around and see if everyone in your area charges the same fee...Good luck and I wish you well.
Reply:Taking care of your teeth is very costly but very worth it--do not delay treatment. (For some people it is more affordable to visit a foreign country where medical service is cheap, including the entire cost of the trip.)
Reply:Well,i go to the dental hospital in manchester.it trains dentists, and its FREE,and the students do everything under supervision, and they are fantastic,i now wont go to a dentist i just turn up at the dental school.

Also, several n.h.s drop in centres have dentists on site and you can book an appointment there if its urgent and thats free too.

I think dental services are terrible now,and i couldnt get an n.h.s dentist to treat me for 7 years,so i went to the dental school.

i dont know where you live in u.k,but n.h.s direct could tell you where you can get free treatment.

i found a site that talks about drop in centre dentists,in many areas coming soon.hope you get sorted.

Extreme pain in wisdom tooth, anyone know if there are any emergency or sliding scale dentists in orlando?

Pain is mostly in tooth but keep tasting metal and the roof of my mouth near that tooth also hurts and is red and swollen, been hurting for a little over a week now. I have been unable to find a dentist that I can afford, I have no insurance and little money saved.

Extreme pain in wisdom tooth, anyone know if there are any emergency or sliding scale dentists in orlando?
Contact your local or state dental association and and see if there are any dentists who provide free or reduced cost care for low-income, disabled or senior patients.

Call your local health department and ask about health centers that provide dental care for free or on a sliding scale.

Go to a dental school, if there is one near you, for reduced costs.

Check http://www.toothwoman.net to see if low-cost or free dental services are available near you.

Check http://bphc.hrsa.gov and choose "Find a Health Center" to see if there is a low-cost clinic near you.

Check http://www.nfdh.org/DDS.html to see if your state has a "Donated Dental Services" program. D.D.S. is designed to locate dentists who will give free care to patients who are financially compromised due to medical problems. Not all states have D.D.S. programs.
Reply:You have infection or rotten tooth. You need to find someone who will take payments. You need antiboditics.

See if their are any free clinics, or go to the ER and get emergency removal and then pay installments.
Reply:visit www.kashidentalhospital.com and post your records there

we provide teleconsultation too

HELP! My band from my braces just fell out and there's no way I can see my regular ortho dentist for weeks?

I go to an orthodontist at school another state away and I can't go see them until I go back to school, which is about three weeks away. Leaving now would be too expensive (i.e. $400 plane ticket). I'm home in Philadelphia for summer vacation. Is there anyway I can go see another dentist just for emergency care? If not, is there any alternatives?

HELP! My band from my braces just fell out and there's no way I can see my regular ortho dentist for weeks?
do u mean a rubber band on one brace? if its that u shouldnt worry, unless its on an edge then u should do the same thing that with the other band thing i mention**.

if u meean the band in the last molar (the metalic one) try put it back in positionin the molar and bite a bit if it fits good but if it doesnt**:

** : theres this kindda forceps that peapole use on pedicures so they cut thick nails buy one of those and cut the wire the closest to the brace (without getting to the rubber band) and u could live with that 4 ur vacations (clean it with alcohol even if new)
Reply:go to walmart and in the hair section, they have tiny little rubber bands to do braids with, they are about the same bands the ortho use, have your mom put in on.
Reply:Yes, look up a local phone book, or find a random person with braces and ask them where they go! They can help you! Even only one vist! It is better then going without getting them fixed and havin to pay more money and havin them in longer!
Reply:r u talking about rubber bands its fine if only 1 fell off

What will the dentist do to my tooth?

Ok, I'm really scared - I'm 16 and I haven't seen a dentist in about 3 years, I know I've got cavities in my teeth and last week I booked an appointment to see a dentist but the appointment isn't for 6 weeks.

Anyway, I started to get toothache in one of my teeth the other day, it's got a pretty bad cavity in it. It's a bottom back tooth and it's got a kind of brownish hole in it going towards the back of the tooth and the two back corners have sort of rotted away I think. I went and bought some clove oil today and it's helped a bit, but then my mum smelled it and asked if I had a toothache, and she's phoned somewhere and got me an emergency appointment with a dentist tomorrow morning.

I'm really scared - he's not going to have to pull out my tooth is he? Will I just get a filling in it or will it need to be pulled out? I'm really scared, I've had fillings before but it was when I was really young so I don't remember what happens. Help!!!

What will the dentist do to my tooth?
You may get away with a filling, if there is infection you may need root canal but if the tooth is severely decayed, it may need to come out. Whatever happens, he will need your consent to do it so you have to make a decision and then you will get local anaesthetic. The needle is fine and very small so you will hardly feel it. After the local goes in, it may sting but after everything will be completely numb and all you will feel is the vibration from the drill. You shouldn't feel any pain at all. If there is infection, you may need antibiotics.

Good luck!
Reply:nobody can tell you because it depends on how bad the tooth has rotted away...removing the tooth is usually a last resort.

silly you not going to the dentist for 3 years when you know you have problems...if i was your mum..you wouldnt have had a choice!!
Reply:It may be best to have the tooth removed as its at the back of your mouth, your not gonna miss or it notice its gone, and it won't affect your smile. Also I had a tooth removed recently at back of my move as it was easier than going through root canal treatment. It wasn't sore either having it removed I was surprised as like you I thought it would be painful.
Reply:Your lucky to go. Dentist techniques are much better. Pain isn't something to worry about. That tooth will cause you more pain than the dentist. Sounds like it will be a root canal. They just clean it out and put a crown over the broken tooth. No biggy- really. If the tooth is all the way rotten then they may pull it, but you won't have to worry because the numb you up well and usualy when it has to be pulled it is ready to come out. Be brave, and you'll see it wasn't so bad. okay? Good luck.
Reply:I had the same problem few years back and i was too scared to go to the dentist, i hadn't been for years coz i had a phobia bout them i had brownish marks on my tooth your tooth has decayed, and so they wll have to do something about it, they may give you an injection so they can sort it out, i had this gel spread on my gum before i had the injection, which is great you don't feel the needle. they just filled mine in.hope all goes well for you! good luck
Reply:My opinion is pretty much the same as everyone else.

You do not have to be scared, it won't hurt you.

Please see the dentist now before you regret it when you get older, and just be brave, it will be over in no time.

I was afraid to go to the dentist as well, this is what I had done:

First a cleaning, then a few fillings, then pulled 2 back wisdom teeth, and finally 2 root canals; all these within two months. Now I feel much much better.

GOOD LUCK..!!!!!
Reply:whatever happens you cant live wih toothache.just hope it can be treated..........
Reply:i duno
Reply:Sounds like you may need a root filling. Toothache is caused by infection, so before the dentist can treat the tooth he will probably give you a course of antibiotics to take the infection away. The treatment wont hurt. The dentist will give you one or two injections into your gum which then will be completely numb. He uses a very fine needle to drill out the infected root and then fills it so it cannot be infected again. Make sure you go back regularly so it doesn,t happen to another one!

I have to pay for my dental treatment and its no joke! All the bestx
Reply:Most dentists absolutely hate to pull teeth unless there is no alternative.

Most likely he will give you a root-canal and a crown if that back tooth is almost gone. Don't worry..you won't feel anything.

If you are very nervous, ask for a sedative first.
Reply:Hello I had a similar problem with one of my bottom back teeth. I hated going to the dentist and the tooth had been filled previously and the filling came out and then a piece of the tooth came out, so I had a huge cavity and the corner of the tooth was missing. I did not want to go to the dentist but the school dentist came and checked everyone's teeth and sent a letter home saying I needed treatment. I still avoiding going for a while, eventually my Mum took me to the dentist, I need to have that tooth filled and 4 other teeth. He did in in 2 appointments doing the left side first then the right side.

I then did not go to the dentist for another four years and I only went because a filling had fallen out from a different tooth and I went to a dentist who a friend recommended and all he did was fill that tooth, I now go every 6 months for a check up.

Good luck at the dentist

An ethical question - I couldn't reach my dentist; should I switch?

I like to think of my dentist as a personal friend. He was my brother's college roommate and I have been taking my boys to him for 15 or so years. He's done a great job, including root canals and crowns for me. In the last few years, I haven't had dental insurance and he's given me a break on his fees a couple of times (but I paid him in cash, so it's Uncle Sam that was shorted).

Yesterday at football practice, my son had two of his teeth knocked out. The only emergency number for my dentist was his home machine and no one answered. I called another dentist (who my dentist had taking his patients last spring when he was on vacation and the same son chipped his two front teeth nearly off playing basketball.)

The second dentist had is cell number as an emergency number and he dropped his kids off at a neighbors to come back to his office to re-insert my son's teeth. Should I switch to dentist #2? I feel like I owe him my regular business.

An ethical question - I couldn't reach my dentist; should I switch?
I wouldn`t . Remember that your dentist has a right to some sort of private life as much as anyone . He did the best he could for you in case of emergency while on holidays . The stand-in dentist was doing just that ....... standing in for YOUR dentist .

You don`t owe dentist #2 your business , and I honestly don`t see why you think you do . Why break up a friendship over something like this ??

There`s another problem you haven`t considered . Dentist #2 is going to go on holidays once a year , and probably have your dentist stand in for HIM !

Then what do you do ?? Go to a THIRD dentist ?
Reply:Your son's teeth were knocked out completely?

Instead of frantically calling your dentist, and then the other one, why didn't you just take your son to the ER?

There are dentists on call at every hospital...

It's up to you if you want to switch to Dentist #2, but just like the first answerer said, Dentist #1 may be on call for him during his vacation...
Reply:stay w/ dentist 1.

I have hole in my temp crown. Is this an emergency?

i got a temporary crown yesterday. i didn't eat anything absurb (just salad and chicken) and now my crown has a big hole in it! it doesn't hurt or anything but i don't want it to get infected or do more damage to my tooth. i called and reported it as an emergency to my dentist but they haven't called me back yesterday. is there anything special that i should be aware of (besides the obvious of not chewing on that side of my mouth)? also, is this an emergency that NEEDS to be treated before monday?

I have hole in my temp crown. Is this an emergency?
Did the tooth have root canal treatment? If so, you won't be sensitive to hot and cold, and you shouldn't have any pain associated with the hole in the temporary crown. If you're worried about getting 'stuff' stuck in there, you could always go to the pharmacy and get something called DenTemp... it's a temporary filling material.

The temporary crown may have been too high, so you've adjusted the occlusion yourself by grounding it down with chewing... for peace of mind, call the dentist's office again on Monday and see what they say~ and no, it's not really an emergency.

:)
Reply:No. You may want to avoid very cold and hot things 'till Monday.
Reply:if its not sore then this is not an emergency. Keep it clean and take it easy on this side of your mouth, the temp will likely last until you get your real crown, if it breaks and falls off go back to the dentist and get a new temp made

Do emergency rooms have Dentists on hand, in addition to medical Doctors?

If not, what if you have an emergency with your teeth?

Do emergency rooms have Dentists on hand, in addition to medical Doctors?
ER's have every specialty on call 24/7, they will come in if it is a true emergency, however, for the most part they will wait until the morning and recommend pain control meds, antibiotics, etc. if it's not urgent.
Reply:yea some do but others dont
Reply:Baylor of Dallas Texas does, in fact it has one of the best Dental schools in the Country.
Reply:Some larger hospitals have oral surgeons on call but they mostly rebuild jaws and lower face after accidents. They don't fill cavities. Call a dentist. Keep calling them (during office hours) till you find one that will see you. Certain oral infections can be life threatening.
Reply:Only certain hospitals do. If you have an emergency,I would call around before going anywhere.
Reply:I think they do sometimes. I remember a long time ago. I had a toothache. I went to an emergency room and had the tooth pulled. It was a very long time ago.....
Reply:I think it is like with most specialist, they have dentist on call so that if there is a dental emergency, they can be called in. At least that is the way it is in our ER. My dentist left the office one time during my daughter's appointment because he was called into the ER. I think it would have to be a major emergency, not just a toothache.
Reply:Rarely. It's best to have a regular dentist on whom you can call in an emergency. But real life-or-death emergencies of a dental nature are pretty uncommon, and most problems can be dealt with by temporizing measures.
Reply:hm i doubht they do but you can look in the phone book and see if there is any dentists that have a emergency number for you to call i'm sure there is because i';ve seen it here.
Reply:Some do but count on doing reg dental work there. But dental offices usually offer emergency services. Like appointments within 24 hours or so.
Reply:Most dental problems aren't emergencies. Most hospitals, thus, do not have dentists on call. Large trauma centers have oral surgeons on call, but usually your toothache is just taken care of best as possible by the ER doc and your sent on your way with instructions to follow up ASAP with your dentist.

Dentists after hours emergency number?

In the State of IL are dentists required by law to have an after hours emergency number. Just curious as mine doesn't %26amp; I've heard some people say they are %26amp; some say they arent.

Dentists after hours emergency number?
I'm not aware that having one is a "law", but I would never even think about not having one for my patients. And if I were a patient I wouldn't go to a dentist that didn't have one.

My sister is havin a really really bad tooth ache, she wants to find an emerency dentist?
check for teaching colleges of dentistry

they usually have free or low cost services available

also contact the local red cross

also many dentists will do work in exchange for work, you could offer to clean their office, do their plant care, etc..
Reply:Any one that is open! They can/will always make room for a walk-in (no appointment) emergency.

Why are there no emergency rooms with dentists?

My husband has a really bad toothache and needs his tooth pulled ASAP!! Why aren't dentists like doctors and on call at the emergency room? U.K. Hospital in Kentucky doesn't even have one. It looks like there would be somewhere you could go.

Why are there no emergency rooms with dentists?
Spacey,

I can help you with this since you don't currently have a dental plan. You can get coverage for your entire family very reasonably! $19.95 a month plus you will also get vision, Rx, and chiro in that cost.

Go to:

http://www.qualitymedicalcare.org for more information and to apply online.

I really hope this helps your family!
Reply:How is he recovering? Report It

Reply:I don't believe so, but there are dentist who will see emergency patients in the ER. I had that happen to me. They do charge more though.
Reply:Most dentists I know have one of them on call for emergencies every night.

Call around. If they can't see him til morning- maybe they could at least give him an RX for pain and sleep.

Good luck.
Reply:If he has a terrible toothache, there's a good possibility he has an abscess or an infection. He needs to be on antibiotics asap to clear it up. If he goes to the ER, they can order pain medication and antibiotics for him. If you have a dentist, call his emergency number and see if he can get in first thing in the morning.
Reply:Most hospitals don't consider toothaches an emergency although I have had enough to say that absolutely are. Plus most dentists are private practice and never have a reason to go to a hospital to see a patient.
Reply:if you have a family dentist call his home

he should be able to help your hubby if

he is a sincere helpful Dr
Reply:I totally agree it would take two minutes to pull that tooth and I see no reason for such nonsense at a hospital!

Good luck and I hope he gets relief
Reply:Why did you wait 'till after hours? A bad toothache usually takes time to develop. I'm sure that if you called your family dentist's emergency no. or first thing in the morning, they will work your husband into their schedule as soon as possible. In the meantime, have your husband take some Extra-Strength Tylenol. No aspirin--just in case the tooth has to be pulled.
Reply:A toothache, unlike a heart attack, can wait until tomorrow. Sorry, but that's just how it is.
Reply:your regular dentist should be able to see you or at least set you up with some pain killers till an appointment could be made...my step dad would go on emergency calls all the time but if its just a tooth ache he would call in pescriptions for the patients...if its got to be pulled any dentist will do. keep calling different ones someone gotta have an opening
Reply:I know teeth problems!!!!!!!!!!!! My husband has had so many......if he is in really really bad pain you can go to the ER. They will make sure it is not an abcess. If not, they will give him some serious pain killers to g et through the night. I have done this way too many times.
Reply:they are on call for their patents, If you have never seen that certain dentist before then he most likely will not be on call for you. Dentist tend to take care of their own clients. That's why its so important to have a family dentist that you have set up a history with, Then if a problem happens you can and meet him at his office and he will help you. Dentisit dont like cold calls, they are a differnt bunch of people.

If you need help to night call 1 800 dentist and ask who is avail. tonight in your area, Call and get help!!!
Reply:Another option is to go to a pharmacy and get a overther- counter med.
Reply:I once went to the emergency in the middle of the night because I was having excruciating tooth pain and the nerve was exposed. The emergency doctor gave me a total nerve block injection in my mouth. My mouth and face was frozen for almost 24 hours and I woke up the next day with a black eye from the injection. I went to my dentist and he scolded me for not calling him on his emergency hot line. He said the doctor gave me the injection in the wrong spot and that's why I got the black eye. It didn't matter to me, I wasn't in pain anymore and the doctor also gave me several percocets.

I suggest you look in the phone book for dentists that have a emergency number. If you can't find one, go to the hospital and get a nerve block.
Reply:Okay. I know for a fact that if it is an absolute emergency, and you go to any ER in the US, they will contact a dentist to come to the E.R. to treat your husband.

The thing is, "toothache" does not constitute an 'absolute' emergency in my mind...most definately your husband will disagree. If your husband is in alot of pain take him to ER and get some pain medication to get him through the night, and then first thing in the morning contact a dentist who will see your husband on an emergency basis in dentist's office.

Good luck!
Reply:Because dental issues are not emergencies, even though it's so pain-full, the pain reaches a peak and then goes away after the tooth dies. The person lives and then gets to wait the rest of the day in the office unless another patient does not show up for a scheduled appointment.
Reply:Other comments are right - if your family has been seen regularly at a dentist, he or she will come in to help you, or at the very least have a colleague who would cover.

There are some people who avoid regular medical and dental care. These are often the ones who needs help for "emergency" situations which might not have become urgent if they sought routine care. Then, they are surprised when they can't get in to see a provider because no one knows them....Of course, I am not speaking of your husband.
Reply:Emergency rooms are for providing critical care of the sick and injured. Dental work is not critical, it can feel like it...Oh boy can it. But it is not a matter of life and death or even a matter of life and limb. There are some 24 dental facilities they have on call dentist but they are not cheap. Take a look in the phone book for emergency dental care. But the best option is to get it taken care of early, before the pain starts.
Reply:I'm a dentist.

The answer to your question is not a simple one.

We in the dental profession know very well that physicians who take emergency call and treat emergency cases run the risk of performing a lot of costly work without getting paid one cent for it. And on top of that, they can STILL get sued by these penniless patients (who are actually more likely to sue than the patients who pay for the doctor's services). We see this scenario, and we want no part of it! Dentistry has done a very good job of resisting the healthcare "system" where uninsured patients get treated for free in emergency rooms at the hospital's expense and the doctor's expense.

Additionally, with the exception of oral and maxillofacial surgeons (who typically handle dental emergencies such as your husband's), most dentists are not affiliated with hospitals. Most hospitals, as it seems, are content with not offering emergency dental services. Those who want such services have a tough time getting oral surgeons to join their staff and take call. Some hospitals do have GPR programs(General Practice Residency) whose residents can handle dental emergencies, but most do not.

Basically, the problem is two-fold: the medical establishment that runs the hospitals doesn't fully appreciate the importance of dentistry (which is basically a branch of medicine), and dental professionals don't want to be bothered with the problems dealt with by medical professionals.

Finally, there is one more aspect: the patients. Most dental problems develop over a lengthy period of time, are easily preventable with routine care, and only explode into emergency situations because of neglect. The bottom line is that a large portion of the public simply doesn't recognize the importance of their oral health until it wreaks havoc on their lives. Besides, ER physicians don't view a "really bad toothache" by itself as an emergency that requires a specialized doctor (i.e. a dentist) to treat it right away. Instead, they give you pain medications, antibiotics, and instructions to see a dentist, and throw you out the door. Only when you have a life-threatening infection do they consider it an emergency that requires immediate treatment.
Reply:Because there are very few things considered a dental emergency.

Oh, and to taylordesigns2003, that is not an absolute fact for every ER in the USA. I've worked in mine for 4 years and have never once seen, paged, or spoken to a dentist about any patient.
Reply:The dentists are too busy eating candy.
Reply:I didn't think they still pulled teeth out in 2007? Mostly people have preventative care done so that pulling teeth isn't necessary? At least, here in Massachusetts, I've never heard of someone having teeth pulled unless they were OLD. Like, in their 70s. Maybe that's something people used to do, but they don't do that anymore.

Tooth Filling Fell out...should I go to the emergency?

I had a temporary tooth filling last Thursday(root canal). This morning (Sat)..I woke up and the filling fell out. My dentist is not open until Monday at noon but there's an alternative number for an emergency. My dentist has given me antibiotics as well for infection. Should I consider this an emergency or should I wait it out for Monday? .

Tooth Filling Fell out...should I go to the emergency?
Not an emergency. Hang in there, monday is just around the corner.
Reply:I would just put it back on with denture adhesive and wait until Monday. It shouldn't hurt anything. Actually, Vaseline might hold it on if you are careful with chewing.
Reply:I dont think your dentist would consider this an emergency, just keep food out of it, take the meds he gave you, and dont miss your appoinment Monday.
Reply:the temp filling is just to keep food out shouldnt be a problem if you keep it clean....Do not miss Mondays appointment.
Reply:You might have a problem putting the temp filling back in bec it needs a clean, isolated, free from saliva cavity to make it stick to the tooth. If I were the dentist, I won't scold you when you see me on Monday. There is nothing you could have done better. Although the point of having the temp in there is to keep food or bacteria away from the cleaned root canal, with this happening, your dentist will just need to clean it again, if it hasn't been filled yet with the perm filling of the canal, the gutta percha. In which case, you will not need to worry about the dentist re-cleaning it again.

Either case, it is not your fault the temp filling came out. As the name implies, it is meant to be in there temporarily, so if it comes out, no one will be surprised. There is a purpose why temp filling is used and not a harder substance. To make it easy to take out when the dentist needs to do something again in the canal the next time you see him/her.

So, no emergency case and no need to bother calling your dentist even. No big deal. Just wait for Monday. :-)
Reply:Since you have had a root canal you should be fine. Take all of your antibiotics so the infection will go away and you shouldn't have any problems. I would call the office on Monday and let them know that the filling came out and they can replace it for you rather quickly. Walmart has a great dental section and I am pretty sure that they have some temporary filling material you can buy. Make sure that you keep the tooth as dry as you can before placing the filling material so it will stick better. That should hold you over until you can see your dentist.

My daughter has finally got in to see a dentist on the NHS?

I've been trying for years now-but finally, when I found a bump on her gum-was able to get her in to see an emergency dentist. The bump was nothing to worry about-but they found 6 cavities! All in her back teeth-all of which are adult teeth. (She's 7.) I'm worried about how she'll react when they come to fill the cavities-my guess is she'll be hysterical! Someone told me they often put children under to fill cavities if they feel the child will be overly distressed. Is that true?

My daughter has finally got in to see a dentist on the NHS?
Sorry you are getting so much grief from your questions. Most people are quick to judge and not help you with your question. I work for an oral surgeon in the USA. There are alot of dentist in my area that will orally sedate a child to fill their cavities since it is easier to hold a child mouth open when they are asleep rather than fight them or get bit.

Good Luck!!
Reply:some dentists do, but it depends if the child will need an injection to start with, my younger brother needed fillings but not an injection and he was fine, ask them and see what they say.....good luck :)
Reply:yes...a child definately...I was put to sleep when having a wisdom tooth out because i was so stressed about it and i'm in my thirties!!! lol...

As for the Dentists thats pityful having to make a child wait so long, which reminds me!..i need to ring for the kids an appointment otherwise they wil get struck off their lists!
Reply:They may choose to knock her out to have the work done if she is likely to go nuts.

i think you should stop feeding her sweets too, 6 cavities in the adult teeth of a 7 year old is disgraceful.

I'm 25 and only ever had 1 filling.
Reply:Six cavities in a seven-year old! I wouldn't be advertising that if I were you. It depends how deep the cavities are as to whether they'll knock her out or not - they'll avoid doing that unless absolutely necessary.

Not being seen by an NHS dentist is no excuse for poor dental hygiene.
Reply:Can I be suggestive, come over to France with your health card and get in to see a dentist here. They are more thoughtful and do not do stupid things like use different metals in your mouth that give you bad breath, you will get in quicker and cheaper. If you contact the DSS they will also allow a "necessary medical visit" certificate that will alleviate the financial side completely.

So there you go, have a holiday, get your teeth done and have better care.
Reply:R u serious. Waited for years just to get an appointment with the dentist. What kind of scheme is NHS is?
Reply:I can't believe this. There is no reason why your child shouldn't have seen by a dentist since she was a little baby. All children are treated free on the NHS and if you couldn't find - or couldn't be bothered to find - an NHS one in your area then you should have phoned your family practitioner committee or equivalent and they would have given you the address there and then. Now you are faced with your child having to have six fillings because her teeth have been neglected.

It will hurt your child, not least because she's not used to the dentist. She will have local anaesthetic not general as this is unnecessary.

I note you blame your ex husband. But what about your responsibility? Did you teach her to clean her teeth, did you (do you) supervise her? She lives with you after all. A 7 year old can't be expected to know instinctively what she should be doing. I am truly shocked.
Reply:At 7 years old your daughter has only got 4 adult molars in her mouth - one in each quadrant - that erupt around ages 5-7 yrs. Any other decayed teeth must be deciduous (milk or baby teeth). Her adult premolars (bicuspids to Americans) should erupt at 9-11 yrs and next adult molars at 12-13.

I'm sure that this has been a wake-up call for you so I'm not going to patronise you with health advice. Check out the BDA 3D mouth for a fun way for your daughter to learn about her teeth and dental health.

Please! A toothache home remedy needed until I can get to the dentist.?

My two upper right side last two teeth have broken. That was a couple of weeks ago. Just due to old fillings and thin tooth enamel there. However, I have been up since 4:30 this morning with a horrible toothache in that area. The pain radiates, so it's hard to tell which tooth it is. It's Saturday. I would prefer not to go to an emergency dentist. Does anyone know of a good remedy for this pain until I can see my dentist?

Please! A toothache home remedy needed until I can get to the dentist.?
Firstr brush your teeth really well there may be a piece of food up in the tooth and that will cause the pain. Second rinse every half hour with a solution of salt water -not too strong not too weak- swish it around really good. Then alternate tylenol and motrin every 4 hours first motrin then tylenol. A toothache kit from the drug store should help too.
Reply:If you have cloves, bite into one, that'll numb it.
Reply:elablue is right and I would add to that to floss because most tooth aches are due to trapped food. also you can crush an aspirin and try to coat the affected area with it. its kind of nasty tasting but it helps. hope everything gets better.
Reply:Maximum strength ambesol for tooth ache, its a life saver. 2 aleve every 12 hrs.

Pregnant and recently had tooth extraction. Now have infection. Emergency Draining may be necessary.?

I am 29 weeks pregnant and 7 days ago I had a tooth extraction. Everything was fine until a few days later. My chin and gums had swollen up and the pain is unbearable still. 3 days ago I went to the emergency dentist and he packed the extraction site and gave me some antibiotics. The swelling is still there and I am still in unbearable pain. I went to my normal dentist today and she said it is very badly infected and if tomorrow it is worst and more swollen I will have to go to the Emergency Room and have it drained. Why is this? And how do they drain it?

Pregnant and recently had tooth extraction. Now have infection. Emergency Draining may be necessary.?
The give you a small amount of local anaesthetic into the area and make a small painless incision into the bigegst part of the swelling to allow the pus to drain. It is much healthier for your baby to get this done than to take more antibiotics or to continue having such a big infection in your body.

In the meantime you can help the infection to drain but rinsing out with a warm salt and water solution. Do this as often as possible and hopefully the infection will begin to drain on its own.
Reply:you need to call your baby doctor and tell them also, before this becomes a real problem

Dentist couldnt extract tooth, was hurting?

Hi, I have had a bad toothache in my of my bottom back teeth for a few days now. I've had a temporary filling in it for a few months, but it was starting to break up which caused the pain.

Its a tooth I've had trouble with on/off for years. I went to the emergency dentist today to see if she could take it out. She numbed everywhere up, made me wait in reception for 20 mins then called me back in. She tested it too see if it was numbed and it hurt a little, so she did it again. Then she tried again and all pain was gone.

Next the part where they try wobbling the tooth backwards and forwards to make it looser. I got a terrible pain, and she decided she couldnt do it, but I felt something crack.

She then took the old temporary filling out, and replaced it with a new one.

Trouble is its hurting quite badly right now.

What can I do to get rid of the pain, and why would it hurt after being numbed up? And will it always be like this when I try to get it out.

Dentist couldnt extract tooth, was hurting?
Good evening (well its evening in Ireland!)

IF there is an infection under your tooth (this infection is often called an abscess) the tooth cannot be pulled.

The anasthetic wont take in the pus-filled absces, it neutralizes the anasthetic so the dentist cant numb the area.

You need antibiotics if there is infection there, and it sounds like there is..Penecillin will blast it,IF u are not allergic..Tetracycline works well too.

Then u can have it extracted.

A temporary filling is of NO USE.In fact it can hold the growing abscess in more creating more pain and pressure.

See your regular dentist, find out if you've an infection..I feel you do, especially if you've a history of trouble from this tooth.. an emergency dentist wants to solve an immediate problem, if she couldnt extract it, she filled it to try and hold you til you got to your own dentist.

If your tooth is vaguely loose,if she could rock the tooth in any little way backwards/forwards it may indicate infection, ie the tooth root is sitting in infection.

Have you swelling?I feel you need antibiotics, followed by extraction.

SEE YOUR REGULAR DENTIST

Paul
Reply:it may not have been numbed up all the way, and even if it was, there would still be a little bit of pain. but if it is too much for you to take, you should just have your dentist put you to sleep to do the operation.
Reply:Sounds like an abscess (a sack full of PUS)That could have kept the dentist from pulling it out

Think of a huge root ball under a plant that is stuck

Antibiotics are usually prescribed then when infection is under control the tooth can come out easily

Sorry you are hurting
Reply:You need to go to your regular dentist soon. She should have given you an antibiotic cause it sounds to me like the novacaine didn't take and that happens if you have an infection at the tooth or if you have had surgery in the past 9 months but going by what you have told me I would go see my own dentist in the morning and for the time being rinse with warm salt water every couple of hours and take asprin and if you have a heating pad use it on low
Reply:You should not be seeing a regular dentist for an extraction like this. You need to see a oral surgeon or a periodontist, someone who specializes in it. A oral surgeons office can knock you out so you won't feel a thing. It is common for teeth to crack and make noise when extracting. If a tooth has an abscess or infection it always is more difficult to numb up. Everything you described is common and normal. You need to wait 15-20 minutes to let the patient become completely numb, then check to see if they are. If not you need to give a booster, not everyones nerves to numb are in the same place. She gave up probally because she is not advanced enough to deal with a cracked root. Go see someone who specializes in oral surgery...a professional.
Reply:I'm a dentist.

Inflammation involves the release of chemicals that make the nerves transmit pain especially well. This is called "hyperalgesia".

Your tooth was in a hyperalgesic state, and as such, is going to be tougher to numb.

In cases like yours, I'll often send patients home on a course of antibiotics and 5-days of NSAIDS, then bring them back and re-attempt the extraction. The vast majority of times, this works.

Of course, talk to your doctor (physician or dentist) prior to taking NSAIDS. They are not appropriate for everyone.
Reply:your tooth is most likely abcessed. when that is the case, they cannot numb you up enough to work on it unless you take antibiotics for at least 5 days prior.
Reply:Please consider all of the possibilities first. There are many common dental causes for tooth-ache.

Dental Cavities

The most common cause of a toothache is a dental cavity. Dental cavities (caries) are holes in the two outer layers of a tooth called the enamel and the dentin. The enamel is the outermost white hard surface and the dentin is the yellow layer just beneath the enamel. Both layers serve to protect the inner living tooth tissue called the pulp, where blood vessels and nerves reside. Certain bacteria i n the mouth convert simple sugars into acid. The acid softens and (along with saliva) dissolves the enamel and dentin, creating cavities. Small shallow cavities may not cause pain and may be unnoticed by the patient. The larger deeper cavities can collect food debris. The inner living pulp of the affected tooth can become irritated by bacterial toxins or by foods that are cold, hot, sour, or sweet-causing toothache. Toothache from these larger cavities is the most common reason for visits to dentists.

Treatment of a small and shallow cavity usually involves a dental filling. Treatment of a larger cavity involves an onlay or crown. Treatment of a cavity that has penetrated and injured the pulp requires either a root canal procedure or extraction of the affected tooth. Injury to the pulp can lead to death of pulp tissue, resulting in tooth infection (dental abscess). The treatment of an infected tooth is either removal of the tooth or a root canal procedure. The root canal procedure involves removing the dying pulp tissue (thus avoiding or removing tooth infection) and replacing it with an inert material.

The procedure is used in an attempt to save the dying tooth from extraction.

Tooth Root Sensitivities

Chronic gum disease also contributes to toothache due to root sensitivities. The roots are the lower 2/3 of the teeth that are normally buried in bone. The bacterial toxins dissolve the bone around the roots and cause the gum and the bone to recede, exposing the roots. The exposed roots can become sensitive to cold, hot, and sour foods because they are no longer protected by healthy gum and bone. The sensitivities may be so severe that the patient avoids any cold or sour foods.

Early stages of root exposure can be treated with topical fluoride gels applied by the dentist or with special toothpastes (such as Sensodyne or Denquel) which contain fluorides and other minerals. These minerals are absorbed by the surface layer of the roots to make the roots stronger and less sensitive to the oral environment. If the root exposure causes injury and death of the inner living pulp tissue of the tooth, then a root canal procedure or tooth extraction may be necessary.

Cracked Tooth Syndrome

"Cracked Tooth Syndrome" refers to toothache caused by a broken tooth (tooth fracture) without associated cavity or advanced gum disease. Biting on the area of tooth fracture can cause severe sharp pains. These fractures are usually due to chewing or biting hard objects such as hard candies, pencils, nuts, etc. Sometimes, the fracture can be seen by painting a special dye on the cracked tooth. Treatment usually involves protecting the tooth with a full-coverage gold or porcelain-fused-to-metal crown. However, if placing a crown does not relieve pain symptoms, a root canal procedure may be necessary.

you should have made her finish taking it out.

now you probably have a bad infection in there. you should go to another dentist like yesterday and have then finish removing the tooth!!!
Reply:get the names of whomever gave you that temporary filling and the nurse then sue them. With a good dentist, you will not even have these issues!

....Also, with a local anesthesia, like that shot she gave you, they can only numb so much. but dont take my word for it, ask a specialist.

Bad tooth, dentist doesn't want to pull it?

I've been to the emergency dentist today cos I had a bad toothache on the top and he pulled it out cos it was really rotten. My teeth are in pretty bad shape in general, I need loads of work done, fillings and stuff, but I can't afford it. I've got one other really bad tooth on the bottom that gives me toothache every now and again, I asked the dentist if he would pull it out too but he wants to do a root canal on it. I told him I couldn't afford it and he said if he pulled it out I'd have to get a fake tooth and that would be more expensive.

How come he pulled out the one today and I don't need a fake tooth but I would if he pulled out the other one? And would I really need a fake tooth or is he just trying to make more money? I really can't afford a root canal just now but the tooth hurts a lot.

Bad tooth, dentist doesn't want to pull it?
without a good look at which tooth you had pulled vs the one you want pulled as well but he wants to save- i can only guess.

my guess is that the one he pulled was a molar on the very back of one of your arches and the one he wants to save must be in between teeth and probably will show in your smile line.

the truth is that a rootcanal and crown is cheaper than a 3 unit bridge which would be needed to replace a tooth extracted with teeth adjacent to it. if you don't care about a gap in your smile then you should tell him so. it is his job to present to you the ideal treatment.

also. you do not mention your age. often , in younger folks who are struggling- they might choose the cheapest initial route only to have insurance and better finances in their future- where at that point- you are looking at all the bad decisions you made due to lack of funds.

if it were my mouth- i would start trying to fix and save what i could. you may can only do one filling or two a month at first- put out the little fires while they are still small and come back to the BIG stuff later unless something blows up into a painful situation.
Reply:shut it and pay up
Reply:Probaly He Want To Give You More Pain. A root canal hurts!
Reply:If there is a dental college near you, they usually let the students do (supervised) work for cheap on indigent patients.
Reply:what you need to do is send a letter to your mp.

we need to get the f*ckers at the house of Parliament to put dentistry back on the nhs.
Reply:Brush your teeth!
Reply:The one he pulled may be in the back, I am guessing. He probably wants you to get a root canal for the other one because it shows and he firgures you won't want a gap there. Go to another dentist. Somebody will pull it for you.
Reply:Get a second opinion from another dentist. If two dentists say the same thing, then they are probably right.
Reply:i had a bad tooth like yourself and went to my local hospitals dentist part.they sorted me out with antibiotics.then took my bad tooth out a few weeks later.if thats any help to you.
Reply:i dont really know but i assume location, like if it was your front tooth that was pulled, a fake tooth would just be to look good, however a back tooth that you need to chew would definetly need a fake tooth. Usually these teeth last 10 years and are around $500-$1,000 i believe
Reply:try and get insurance and go to another dentist!!

I had root canal treatment and after all the pain the tooth broke in half - so they want to pull it out too. But I've just kept it -

so the root canal treatment was a waste of time and money and it hurt like hell!!!!!
Reply:you will need a fake tooth if you can see the gap when you smile or if you wont be able to eat proparly when he pulls it. dentists are monitored quite heavily so I dont think he is telling you any lies.
Reply:well if you really would prefer to have it pulled out stand your ground and tell the dentist thats what you want it is after all your tooth and your money.
Reply:If it is in the front, I would find a way to pay for the root canal. Borrow money from someone, put it on a credit card, or some dentists even offer payment plans. If it is toward the back, somewhere where you wouldn't notice the gap, then just go to another dentist. Tell them pull it or I will take my business elsewhere.
Reply:A root canal only prolongs the time when it will have to be pulled. Its not worth it, trust me. If he won't pull it, go somewhere else.
Reply:The dentist is probably trying to save some teeth you still have. A root canal is expensive but its a little cheaper than getting a false tooth. The tooth the dentist pulled was probably too far gone to try to save. If the dentist can save the bottom tooth your better off in the long run. Good Luck with the situation hope you find the insurance or money to pay for your dental treatments. Where was the tooth located at that he pulled today in front or back ;right or left side of the mouth
Reply:I had root canal on one tooth, cost a fortune and it still plays up now.

Another tooth needed root canal so I pulled it out myself. No pain at all now. Cheers Mr Dentist u money grabbing c*nt.
Reply:Call NHS Direct on 0845-4647 and they can tell tell you where you nearest NHS dentist is. A root canal treatment on the NHS is the same price as having it out (£42.40) and it is always best to save them if you can, and in response to the other answers, they do hurt if you have been numbed beforehand, they are no different to a filling.
Reply:I noticed that most dentists don't like to pull teeth if they don't really need to. If they are really, really in bad shape, then they will, but if they can do a root canal, then they'd rather do that. I have teeth that need work too, and I too can not afford it, so I'm where you are.

Where is the tooth? If it's in the front, then he'll probably want to put a fake tooth there. If the first one was in the back, they don't worry, no one can see it.
Reply:Make another appointment for tooth hurty.
Reply:some teeth can be saved by removing the root only

antibiotics do some times reverse infection

i think he wants to save your tooth

maybe in 5-6 years he has to take it out

trust the man

What can i do:No dentist and in pain?

Im in pain i know one tooth has to come out,and ive got a tooth that is really sensitive to cold only, because a bit of tooth came away

Even when they numbed my mouth he just jabbed the needle in

There is no teaching hospitals arund here

When i went to the emergency dentist he said at least 6teeth have to come out

Please someone tell me there is hope?

What can i do:No dentist and in pain?
Just been to my own NHS Dentist they changed him for a newly qualified one well my tooth hurts more now than before filling was done and he said i can do this without an inj i said no you wont cost cutting yet again i am looking into Den-plan you pay all year then get treated by a proper dentist i haven't checked it out yet maybe you could look into it A and E wont help.
Reply:Try A%26amp;E..not sure if they will help
Reply:call the NHS direct and they will give you an emergency dentist to call
Reply:Hopefully there are other emergency dentists in your area.

Go to a search engine such as google.co.uk and type in (name of area, where you live) PCT dentists. Search pages from the UK. Keep a log of your experiences and contact your local MP. The Government need to know the misery caused to thousands of people.
Reply:You obviously are in urgent need of dental care. Do get it or you could lose all your teeth. NHS Direct is well worth a try. They should be able to steer you in the right direction. Good Luck
Reply:Ok, I understand you don't have good coverage at this time. Call around and ask who takes CareCredit. It's a credit card for medical bills that you can apply for on line carecredit.com. A lot of offices offer 3 or 6 months same as cash through this credit card with the option to do 24 months extended credit. The interest after that is very low provided you pay the minimal on time.

I'm sorry to hear that you have such a bad experience with dentist. Unfortunately some dentist are that way. A lot of dentist don't have sympathy for patients trying to rush and squeeze into their schedules due to the fact that the patient is only responding to symptomatic conditions. Dentists are firm believers in preventative care. A cleaning every 6 months is rather cheap as apposed to restorative work. From here on get those check ups every 6 months. They are affordable.
Reply:Here you go hun.

Ring the NHS direct number on here and they will tell you where to go for treatment.

Put it another way, if you don't get treatment you WILL lose all your teeth.

How long it take for a dentist to call back an emergency page after hours?

Usually within 15 minutes.... but it shouldn't take any more than 30............

If the message was left with an answering service, then they have to call him directly, give the info, and then the call will be returned...

If the message was sent to the dentist directly, via a page, then it should be a shorter call-back time....

Hope everything is ok.........

Impossible to say, some NEVER return calls.

If they are not busy in a proceedure, or dead asleep, or feel like being high and mighty, they usually return the call within 15 to 30 minutes. that's why they have the emergency pager. If they don't call back, go to a hospital that has dentistry available 24 hrs a day.
Reply:They have a responsibility to phone you just as soon as they receive the page. Failure to do so can cause them to have their paging privileges (and often hospital privileges) REVOKED.

Additionally, failure to respond immediately can put a patient as risk. This poses a huge legal liability for the non-responsive dentist.

Dentists who do not respond immediately should be reported to their licensing body and to the local hospital. They are putting patients in need at risk.

Can I eat with chipped front tooth, is it considered emergency that I should see dentist for?

No, it is not an emergency my dear.

Can I eat with chipped front tooth, is it considered emergency that I should see dentist for?
Yes you can eat. No it is not an emergency. If it hurts though chances are there is some nerve involvement and may get worse so you will need to see a dentist. If it does not hurt then it will be okay for you to wait until your next appt and then can just filie it down.
Reply:Go a head and munch out, I've had teeth knocked out of my head in a bar fight and kept on keeping on.
Reply:only if you want to fix it and not have a big gap until you get stainless steel pegs screwed into the bone where the tooth attached and a plastic one glue on he peg. to fill he big gap. if you dont care just leave it alone. avoid hard candy and tough steak. one you break one theyh tend to crumble. a piece at a time.
Reply:I'd only eat soft foods (think Jello) and try to go to the dentist as soon as possible.
Reply:it depends on the extent of damage of ure tooth... if its minor tooth chip then forget it... but if u bled that time and if u feel sensitivity whrn taking hot or cold then u require a root canal or just a filling so see a dentist then
Reply:If it dont hurt why not my grandfather eats with no teeth.
Reply:It depends on how much is chipped out. If it is a very small piece it really doesnt matter much. But if its a bigger piece then chances of a nerve exposure are high and then its better to get the nerve "insulated" through a cement dressing from your dentist right away to avoid a potential root canal treatment some time later. Remember an exposed nerve is open to all kinds of bacteria in the mouth and that's asking for trouble.
Reply:Yes u can eat with a chipped front tooth as long as it does not hurt and it does not mean if it does not hurt u shoul leave it the way it is, u should see a dentist about the chipped tooth to prevent infections from occuring

What to do if emergency dentists are unavailable?

My dad is in unbearable pain. His tooth is killing him. We have called all the emergency dentists in our area and none called back. It keeps getting worse. What should he do?

What to do if emergency dentists are unavailable?
Most hospitals' Emergency Rooms have a dentist or oral surgeon on call........ get him there if no one calls you back.

Even if you aren't a patient of record at a dental office, an emergency is an emergency, especially in your case........someone should have had the courtesy to call you back.

Best of luck to you and your Dad.

Reply:You can always go to an emergency room. Usually such pain is indicating an infection. That can affect the entire system, so it is medical, too. Don't wait.

I cannot understand, however, why he is not getting a call back. That is not right!

24 hr. emergency dentists in western Chicago suburbs?

I've been searching and searching, and all the "call us here after hours for emergency treatment" dentists around here either have their VM turned off, the number doesn't connect, or they don't return the call.

Does anybody know of a REAL 24 hr. emergency dentist near Aurora, IL? I need this darn tooth pulled asap! Thanks

24 hr. emergency dentists in western Chicago suburbs?
You should go to a hospital ER. They may be able to at least give you an Rx of antibiotics and some analgesics to tide you over until you can see a dentist.

Some hospitals have an oral surgery department with a resident on-call who might be able to do extractions on ER cases, so that's a possibility as well.

I have Medicaid for my pregnancy insurance. Does it pay for an emergency visit to the dentist?

I know your doctor has to write a referral before the dentist will do anything, but I was wondering does Medicaid cover the price if it has to be done during pregnancy? Thanks!

I have Medicaid for my pregnancy insurance. Does it pay for an emergency visit to the dentist?
No they only cover prenatal care.
Reply:ya I think so I know people thats on it
Reply:Why do u have medicaid? I'm on ssi and thats why I have it. As long as any doctor takes medicaid, then you're fine. Do u have to pay a copay? Hospitals always take medicaid. Good Luck hun. Call your local social security office and they will give you one or two docs in ur area that takes it. Good Luck, how ever it depends what ur at the dentist for. Ask a professional if u can get stuff done while ur pregnant. Good Luck
Reply:depending on the type of medicaid you have. I know sometimes you can use it for optical visits but I'm not to sure about going to the dentist without a referral from the doctor. My friend made her a dentist appointment and medicaid paid for it without a referral.
Reply:it should be marked on your medicaid card. if not ask your case worker to help you out usually they can help.
Reply:Medicaid is usually given out through your local "Welfare" (the name varies from state to state ours is The department of Job and Family Services) Unless you are on disability and then you can get either Medicare or Medicaid. I live in Ohio and my doctor didn't have to write a referral to see my dentist. It will pay for emergency room visits, doctor's visits, dentist's visits, and your OB/GYN also prescriptions (not all, but most of them) . I have been on medicaid since I was unable to work. It is great health insurance. You shouldn't have a co-pay either. Out here they switched to like Gateway, Unison, or Caresource. If you have any of the above there is a 24 hour nursing hotline and they can usually tell you what they cover. The number is on the back of the card. Other than that call your welfare office and they will be able to point you in the right direction as it sometimes varies from state to state.
Reply:ONLY if you go to a dentist that approves medicaid!!!!!!

What do I do if my dentist won't see me on emergency and I am having wisdom teeth problems?

I posted a question a couple hours ago about my 4 impacted wisdom teeth I got taken out, the dry socket I developed which the dentist did nothing about, and how there was a decently sized shard of tooth still in one of the extraction sites which I removed myself last night with alot of effort and bleeding. I left a message for the dentist on call (the place I got the procedure done was not my regular dentist or anything) and when they called back they said that they wouldn't see me and now I don't know what to do because everything I've read and all the answers I have received have told me that I need to see someone immediately and that it would be well considered an emergency, but the pain isn't serious enough for me to think I would have to go to the ER. What do I do now? I can't see my regular dentist today because it's Sunday and there is no one on call but I can see him tomorrow but I'm also leaving for vacation at 9 am and I am very stressed.

What do I do if my dentist won't see me on emergency and I am having wisdom teeth problems?
First of all I work in a dental office and they HAVE TO have someone on call on Sunday- it's illegal not to. They may not want to see you b/c they did not do the surgery. Call the office who did the surgery-they have to see you. It is normal for boney pieces to work there way out after the surgery-LEAVE THEM ALONE!! They will come out on there own don't pull them out. Second of all if you have a dry socket they will pack it with medicine and it will be instant relief. If noone will help you out where you have gone it is time to find a new dentist. Call the oral surgeon--or go to the hospital they have dentists ( usually residents) on staff and they can help you. Leave your own mouth alone. Take 3 advil every 6 hours if you are in pain. Good luck!

It depends on the state!!! Where I live a DMD can not refuse tmt on a pt. This is for the know it all who wrote after me.
Reply:If you don't think you can wait, look up an ER dentist in the phone book and do a walk in appointment. Also, in my area, the state hospital is equipped to do dental emergencies as well.

I would say if you pulled a piece of tooth out yourself, that IS an emergency.
Reply:yup, just walk in onto an er. they will treat you anyway whether for you, it is a real emergency or not. and go look for another dentist. preferably, one who really cares for their patients.
Reply:Call the oral surgeon's office that did your extraction. They should have a number to call in an emergency. If that doesn't work, go to your local urgent care center. Some are attached to a tradition ER in a hospital, some are stand-alone. But they'll be able to help you out without keeping you there for hours on end. You also may want to look into alternate choices for when to leave for vacation. How much fun will you really have if you're in that much pain anyway?
Reply:go to an er immediately because you dont want toget on vacation and get caugt out three though the pain is not strong now anything will trigger a attack and you will go crazy better safe than sorry at least the er will prevent you from waking up or having a drink ont the plane and it triggers your tooth
Reply:go to different dent's
Reply:The question is, why would you schedule your vacation and your wisdom teeth surgery at the same time?
Reply:GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM! You should have NEVER attempted to remove the shard of tooth. That was beyond STUPID and you very likely will wind up with an infection as a result. Dry socket can be caused by smoking, sucking on a straw, or spitting can also cause it. So can bacteria - which probably came from you sticking your hands in your mouth, digging at the extraction like an idiot. Dry socket is VERY common and is not life threating. Its also not uncommon for small portions of the root to remain after an extraction. Unlike a medical doctor, a dentist can turn you away for treatment. Because if any matter is life threating - they would have to send you to an ER anyway. So, stop stressing out and head for a hospital. Socket irrigation and some topical anti-inflammatory drugs can treat dry socket - you can get them from an emergency room. No dentist is going to see you today and they aren't obligated to anyway. The person before me stated it was illegal for a dentist to not have someone on call - thats not correct. They can simply state on the recording that if you are having a dental emergency to head to your nearest emergency room. You'll have instant relief once you get treatment. AND KEEP YOUR HANDS OUT OF YOUR MOUTH!

Dental filling has fallen out of front tooth. Looks ugly. Would it be considered emergency by dentist?

Yes, but exagerate slightly and tell them it hurts a lot just to be sure to get in quicker

Dental filling has fallen out of front tooth. Looks ugly. Would it be considered emergency by dentist?
Yes.
Reply:I think it might be, they're not supposed to fall out like that as far as I know!
Reply:Only if he's not busy.
Reply:it would only be an emergancy if it feels ugly.. if it looks ugly you still have to go to the dentist.
Reply:Yes, it would b considered an emergency since u are displeased wit ure appearance.

A temporary filling can be made and a future appointment made to do the whole job nicely and neatly.
Reply:it may be considered an emergency- but i would schedule an appointment with the dentist as most dentists do not take after hours calls. if you can't get in within a week. they sell this stuff over the counter that is temporary that will fill the hole in your tooth- its in the dental aisle in most stores that carry toothpaste etc. i cant' remember the name of it though- but it says on it emergency repair. and its usually near the denture stuff.
Reply:Only if it is causing you pain because air is hitting a nerve when you open your mouth to talk or eat.
Reply:I think it would be. Call and see. You will need to have it replaced anyway, don't wait.
Reply:Yes tell them it hurts! And you refuse to leave the house until it is fixed!
Reply:yes just say it's painful
Reply:Yes but you must say you in bad pain with it or else it maybe classed as cosmetic and not be able to get it refiled on nhs.
Reply:Two answers...

1) if it's an emergency to you, then it's an emergency to the dentist, especially if you are a patient of record and even more so if your dentist placed that filling

2) if it's 3 in the morning and you call a dental office, and it says on their answering machine "if you are experiencing an emergency, hang up and call 911", in that case, it is not an emergency, do not call 911, do not go to the hospital or do not try to page a dentist during the night.
Reply:if your dentist is still open now, go right away to fill it. if not, go first thing in the morning.

if it is a surface filling that fell out, it wouldn't be as urgent than if a deep filling fell out and exposed the inside of the tooth. but that said, do go as soon as possible.
Reply:absolutely not.

an emergency is reserved to swellings, fever, and extreme pain. a little soreness from a filling that falls out is an urgency, not an emergency. my guess is that you haven't been to a dentist in the last six months as you should have. also, i would guess that the tooth is totally rotten because filling don't just fall out. you can avoid things like this by going to the dentist twice a year.
Reply:Yes, also a little drama helps too.

If you call in for an emergency and can wait more than 30 minutes before coming in then it's not an emergency.

Dentist Emergency??Please help?

I don't have health coverage. I'm 20 years old and I can't get health coverage because I get denied because I am ill. I am extremely poor. I had a cavity in my tooth that weakend my tooth and today part of it chipped off what can I do? I can see a dentist that doesn't need for me to have health coverage but I cannot afford to make a payment at this time. Please help

Dentist Emergency??Please help?
Sometimes their are dental schools that will fix your teeth for a small charge or free.

What kind of illness would prevent you from getting health insurance? If you are so ill and poor, shouldn't you be able to get disability and therefore medical care?
Reply:Have you applied for Medicaid? If you are not eligible, I know of a great discount health plan. They have dental and medical plans. I know the dental plan can be used with medicaid. I will give you the website.

tri NHS direct

Im sorry but I dont think youll find one at this time.

Best to try in morn
Reply:Hate to sound blunt but use a phonebook
Reply:go to the emergency room.
Reply:At the moment i would advise against going to the dentist. I ahd the same problem two weeks ago and withing a few days it had resolved itself
Reply:awe the poor child don't you have an emergency number for a doc in Carlow we have care doc they might give him an injection for pain just till morning when you can take him to dentist nothing worse than tooth ache
Reply:Use clove oil for the time being and make an appointment. clove oil will take pain away will you find dental treatment.
Reply:I would start with the phone book. Usually they are very thick books with white or yellow pages in them or sometimes both. You can also try 1-800-Dentist if you cant figure that out it's 1-800-336-8478
Reply:The phone book will always state which dental surgeries carry an emergency/after hours service.
Reply:Why don't you try your local phone book?
Reply:Your own dentist should see him as an emergency, (you do have a dentist and take him for regular check ups, don't you???)

Best of luck!
Reply:try this number 800-DENTIST (800-336-8478) they might be able to help you.
Reply:In Case of a Dental Emergency... Thorpe Lea Dental Practice. Colin Houston BDentSc (Dublin) 01784 454899 .
Reply:Sorry but this probably isnt much help as it is for visitors to Ireland.

Emergency dental treatment for the relief of pain and urgent denture repairs are available to those eligible under EU regulations from a dentist contracted to the health board. Other necessary dental treatment is provided through local Health Office clinics as well as by contracted dentists.

If dental treatment becomes necessary, contact the local Health Office or health centre to get details of contracted dentists or local Health Office clinics. In emergencies, ascertain that the dentist you choose yourself is contracted to the local Health Office to provide services under the GMS system, and tell him or her that you are seeking treatment under EU regulations.

This one is for the Dental School but probably not much use either, as they are only open to provide additional out of hours emergency service on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays from 9am to 11.00pm.Dublin Dental School and Hospital Out of Hours Emergency Service?

Telephone (01) 612 7200

Your call will be connected to an answering service

After you hear the beep tone, state clearly your name and the telephone number and where you can be reached for the next two hours

A dentist will telephone you as soon as possible and advise you as to what to do next.

Why not phone your local hospital and ask for advice, they might even be able to give him pain relief until tomorrow.

hope this helps :)
Reply:nhs direct 08454647....you should have an emergency 24 hours doctors surgery near you if you telephone them and tell them his is in very bad pain and cant sleep the may issue him some antibiotics if his tooth is tender to percussion if it hurst when biting or tapping it it is more than likely that and will need anti bi...if not the doc can give him some painkillers to tide him over...............bless him hope he ok..
Reply:phone book. Ask your friend who they go to. A few years ago my husband had a tooth ach, it was the day befor thanksgiving, our dentist was on vacation so I called the one down the street they told me to send him right in . He left work and went right over they took better care of him then our would of. So just call around.
Reply:have you tried looking in the yellow pages or speaking to you doctor? I am sure thast would be a good starting point.
Reply:Call your local hospital they will tell you
Reply:local newspapers sometimes give a list of emergency dentists and chemists

I have got really bad tooth ache and with it being easter my emergency dentist is closed?

I have a bottle of whisksky here and and some strink . does the old way of tieing strink to the tooth and door hurt

I have got really bad tooth ache and with it being easter my emergency dentist is closed?
clove oil
Reply:take a pain killer instead
Reply:Oh lordy.

Chew cloves if you have them as this works.

peppermint tea works.

Last resort saline water (salt water) often to clean and sterilise and prevent the pain.

I truly sympathise with you. I am a dental phobic and I now get professional treatment as such. My above remedies are from the years I was too terrified to go to dentist.
Reply:Put some whisky on cotton wool and bite on it failing that got a good pair of pliers here drink rest of whisky first though :-)
Reply:go to the shop and buy some creme de menth or similar and swill round the tooth, this should help a bit.
Reply:You should get a medicine that is for toothache or eat a advil cold and sinus to make it don't hurt bad.
Reply:Swill the whiskey around your tooth, forget the string. Take care and hope you get it sorted tomorrow.
Reply:I would ring my local hospital or A+E, and ask there advice.

If no luck ring NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.

All the best.
Reply:Yea well that is gonna hurt too.

If there is no swelling, use a hot compress to relieve the pain. If swelling is present, use a cold compress.

Or you could try the ice in the hand trick(Get an ice cube %26amp; place it in the hand on the side the tooth is hurting.)Hold it there til it melts.

Good luck
Reply:oh no the worse pain mate .had it afew weaks ago.alchol want help will make it worse, the door will be more painful.best bet is to crunch a couple of nurfeon and dab it on the effected tooth u will get sum relief good luck
Reply:The string and the door handle trick works only if the tooth is really loose. I would suggest taking some really strong painkillers ( not if you have been drinking the whiskey tho )

If your tooth is really loose, then chewing a thick slice of bread may bring it out, careful not to swallow it tho.
Reply:omg, dont do that,go to your nearest A and E and tell them the pain is unbearable, but for goodness sake dont try the string and door method, you could bleed to death.
Reply:i would not advise you to pull the tooth out,i no tooth ache is the worst ever pain i used oral get its like a anesethic you might not get some tonight tho,i was told when i couldnt get an emergencey appointment to go to my hospitals a%26amp;e and they may remove it or give me a stronger pain killer.i did not go as before finished my call a cancellation came through, ring the hospital tell them you cant cope with the pain and they should see you.xxx
Reply:Drink the whisky leave the choc and sleep it off till the dentist opens.
Reply:Go and buy Neurofen Meltlets they rock!!!
Reply:Don't try to pull the tooth out you may cause more damage, forget about the whiskey and take 2 paracetamol and 1, 200mg of Ibuprofen it won't harm you only DO NOT take them if you have had whiskey.
Reply:it helps me when i have tooth/gum ache to chew on chewing gum or something chewy- probably best not sweets- on the other side of the mouth

im not good at science, so i dunno why but it takes away the pressure you are feeling on the bad side of your mouth, all the muscles are concentrated on chewing.

i dunno..but it works for me!
Reply:put a small piece of paracetamol in your mouth when it goes soft press it onto the top of the tooth that should take it off always works for me unless you got abcess if you are in the uk you can go to emergency dentist or hostpital, dont suffer get seen to,dont try the door thats for children only that dont have roots on teeth you will be in agony if you ring your dentist while shut should be anawer phone for emergencies tell you where to ring.good luck
Reply:clove oil always burns the hell out of my gums and doesn't do much else.

My own remedy is to rub some cayenne pepper over the aching tooth. this does actually work.

What is the best treatment for a toothache, besides an emergency dentist visit?

If it's absest you'll want the infection down so use luke warm salt water or poroxide. It'll hurt alot at first but it'll keep the infection down. all els for the pain, asprin %26amp; clove oil.

What is the best treatment for a toothache, besides an emergency dentist visit?
Get some Vicodin. The stuff works like crazy, you won't feel a thing.
Reply:get whole cloves. place on gum next to the hurting tooth. cloves have a natural anesthesia, and will really help with the pain. taking motrin as well will only help you. good luck buddy.

Ah sorry, as I don't live there. If I had known you wanted a personal recommendation out of all the hits on the google, then I would have answered differently...but... being in a different state (of the USA, not necessarily "state of mind"), I wasn't able to comment perhaps as well as I could have.
