I had a temporary tooth filling last Thursday(root canal). This morning (Sat)..I woke up and the filling fell out. My dentist is not open until Monday at noon but there's an alternative number for an emergency. My dentist has given me antibiotics as well for infection. Should I consider this an emergency or should I wait it out for Monday? .
Tooth Filling Fell out...should I go to the emergency?
Not an emergency. Hang in there, monday is just around the corner.
Reply:I would just put it back on with denture adhesive and wait until Monday. It shouldn't hurt anything. Actually, Vaseline might hold it on if you are careful with chewing.
Reply:I dont think your dentist would consider this an emergency, just keep food out of it, take the meds he gave you, and dont miss your appoinment Monday.
Reply:the temp filling is just to keep food out shouldnt be a problem if you keep it clean....Do not miss Mondays appointment.
Reply:You might have a problem putting the temp filling back in bec it needs a clean, isolated, free from saliva cavity to make it stick to the tooth. If I were the dentist, I won't scold you when you see me on Monday. There is nothing you could have done better. Although the point of having the temp in there is to keep food or bacteria away from the cleaned root canal, with this happening, your dentist will just need to clean it again, if it hasn't been filled yet with the perm filling of the canal, the gutta percha. In which case, you will not need to worry about the dentist re-cleaning it again.
Either case, it is not your fault the temp filling came out. As the name implies, it is meant to be in there temporarily, so if it comes out, no one will be surprised. There is a purpose why temp filling is used and not a harder substance. To make it easy to take out when the dentist needs to do something again in the canal the next time you see him/her.
So, no emergency case and no need to bother calling your dentist even. No big deal. Just wait for Monday. :-)
Reply:Since you have had a root canal you should be fine. Take all of your antibiotics so the infection will go away and you shouldn't have any problems. I would call the office on Monday and let them know that the filling came out and they can replace it for you rather quickly. Walmart has a great dental section and I am pretty sure that they have some temporary filling material you can buy. Make sure that you keep the tooth as dry as you can before placing the filling material so it will stick better. That should hold you over until you can see your dentist.
