Pain DURING root canal treatment?

Hi all,

I was experiencing severe toothache so went for an emergency appointment at the dentist...I got a random dentist who had a free space (now I know why !)

Well I went in and explained that I had a dull pain in my gum and it was sore when I bite... she took an x ray checked it and consulted with the head dentist who both agreed Root canal treatment is the best course of action.

She proceeded to numb my mouth with one injection (is one normal ?) and drilled away at my mouth... it was uncomfortable but not necessarily painful... however as it got further down the tooth it got more painful at which time she gave me another injection... she then finished the drilling of the tooth which was almost totally pain free. then...

She stuck the file down the cana to clean it out OUCH !

It hurt like hell at which point she said she woud put something down to clean it out and put a temp filling over it.

She said that it wont be sore next appointment because of this and I will get the root

Pain DURING root canal treatment?
You probably had an infection that made it so you couldn't get all the way numb. In my office we always prescribed an antibiotic in situations like this.

I regards to changing dentist in the middle of the procedure every office is different some offices will let you and some will not they don't like to step on toes. Talk to your office and see what they say.

As for the comment about her being new and having alot of cancellations (apparently) it could just be that she does not have an established patient base yet as she is new. Give her the benefit of the doubt on that one.

Call the office talk to the Secretary or an assistant and see what they think that you should do. They are always willing to help.
Reply:Different dentists have different techniques. If you didn't like her go to a different one. It shouldn't have been that painful. I went to several dentists till I found one I wasn't afraid of.
Reply:I just went through this process about 6 months ago so I know how painful it can be. My dentist told me I had an infection and that's why I was in so much pain. He prescribed me some Amoxicillin to clear the infection. It helped so much! Don't be afraid to tell your dentist if you're in pain. Anytime I felt the slightest amount of pain, my dentist would numb me up again. After that, the root canal was nothing! I sat back in my chair and almost fell asleep.
Reply:I had a root canal very recently and the file part was the only part that hurt. I think what you experienced was pretty normal. There is no reason to switch dentists based on what you described.
