Pain in my tooth?

I have had a really bad pain in my tooth. It already has a large filling in it (covering it all apart from the sides). This tooth is the 4th tooth on the top left. It hurts when pressed gently but doesnt when its pressed harder. It really hurt when I had a some warm food (the side of my face clenched up!). Is this a nerve problem? My actual tooth looks fine. No cracks and no more decay or cavities. Could this be just an infection in the gum or something? Its soooo painful.

I have booked the dentist but the soonest available emergency appointment was in 5 days time. and I'm a private patient.

Pain in my tooth?
Sounds like you probably have an abscess that is already at the root of your tooth. I am surprised that there is a 5 day wait. You should find a different dentist.

I recently had an abscess that did not show up on x-rays and my teeth looked fine but it was the tooth that had a large filling in it. My dentist did not think it was an abscess becuase it was not shwoing the signs of an abscess.

Whether or not it shows up on the x-ray or you have pain here and there i am willing to bet it is an abscess. Here are a few things i did:

- If warm water bothers the tooth then sometimes room temp or a little colder water will help it. Try swishing with a little salt mixed in.

- Get pain killers from the ER. They will usually give you something until you have to get in to see the dentist and they may even tell you to get another dentist because this qualifies as an emergency.

- Try some over the counter medicines that you can get at a local pharmacy like CVS for tooth aches. It may not help much but at least it is something.

Mine got so bad that i was using Ibuprofen 800mg. directly on the tooth and i would not feel a thing. My dentist was not happy because he said you can get chemical burns on your gum line but to take the pain away it was worth it and luckily no chemical burns.

Good luck and i hope this helps!
Reply:YOUR BEST BET IS IF YOU HAVE LONG TERM PROBLEMS WITH THIS TOOTH AND YOU DON'T HAVE AN ABCESS OR INFECTION ASK THEM TO REMOVE IT AND NO MORE PAIN
Reply:If you had the filling recently that is probably why is sensitive to all kinds of things. It should go away in about a month.

There is a possibility that your tooth needed more than a filling, like a root canal or something like that.

If the dentist that made you that filling isn't taking you right away, call another dentist that is available and willing to take care of your needs when you need him. If its hurting you shouldn't have to wait more than 2 days to see someone.

Call another dentist.
Reply:Hi,

You can Never be sure with a heavily filled tooth.

There may be decay Or infection under the filling.

I would turn up at my dentist first thing in the morning if possible, before other patients arrive and let s/he know in definite terms you Need to be seen, its an emergency.

If its an abscess you'll need antibiotics to kill the infection and its better to get them ow rather than when it sets in more.

An x-ray Usually shows an infection , though they have been known not to,but a good dentist will know.

When a tooth pains when pressed this often indicates infection.

If you cant get in to your normal dentist tomorro, get into another!

Feel free to email me with any questions

Good luck

Reply:Sounds very like what I had,if your dentist xrays the tooth, there could be a gap between the filling and base of the tooth, this calls for root canal. and if you want my advise avoid it at all costs I have never felt pain like it. Just a guess though.
