Need a lot of work done and I'm scared?

OK, so I'm 25, I hadn't been to the dentist in a LONG time and I guess I haven't taken very good care of my teeth, eaten a lot of sweets and stuff.

Anyway, I got this really bad toothache in the week and I had to go to the emergency dental access centre, where the dentist said the tooth was pretty badly decayed and I'll probably need a root canal on it. He drilled it out and put in a medicated filling, he's given me some antibiotics to take and referred me to a dentist in town next week to have it looked at and fixed properly.

He says I need quite a few fillings as well, I think about 5 or 6, which I guess I expected after not going to the dentist in so long.

But he said my top two wisdom teeth were very badly decayed and would need to be extracted. He showed me with a camera thing and they look really rotten, but I've never had any pain from them at all, how can that happen?

Need a lot of work done and I'm scared?
poor you, I hate the dentist too. My friend had teeth like you and went and got the work done, she was crying and everything. The dentist will just do a bit at a time so all the work your talking about will probably be split over 8 appointments, tell your dentist your fears and they'll guide you through the process.Good Luck
Reply:they only hurt when they hit a nerve! in some cases, you might bite into something and the whole tooth would just crumble!

a filling is quite easy! they numb your gum, drill and fill. your mouth will be numb for a few hours, you wont be able to tallk properly and you cant eat for so long after getting the fillings!

bet you wish you looked after your teeth now :)
Reply:Hi

Try not to be scared the little bit of discomfort you'll feel will be nothing to the real pain of toothache, kid yourself your're having cosmetic surgery and that it's your decision costing you thousands of pounds, remember the dentists are there to help you, you'll feel fantastic when it's all over with.

Reply:Why don't you just get them all out and be done with
Reply:Going to the dentist can be a very stressful thing especially if you are lacking health insurance which many Americans are. I have heard that a root canal isnt that bad because they numb your mouth up really good first. Try not to stress about it so and do your best to take really good care of your teeth from here on out.
Reply:i had a root canal they drill ur tooth and i think remove the nearve it aint that bad cause the dentist will make it numb first dont panic, and a filling is nothing cause ur mouth is numb aswell. if u got 2 have your wisdom teeth out i would get them 2 knock u out first, i was when they took out 4 of my back teeth. dun forget 2 brush everyday and dun eat 2 much fizzy pop and sweets u will regret it when u got false ones
Reply:the bad teeth would hurt eventually i hated dentists as a kid but technology is a lot better now although i dont enjoy it i do go because i am vain and like to look my best

bad teeth will make your breath smelll and its best you get them sorted before you get abcesses and beleive me its agony

good luck nobody likes to visit the dentist bear with it take a friend along for support
Reply:OK you don't get pain from a tooth unless the decay goes into the nerve, if it is not in the nerve the tooth can be sensitive but no pain. That's for your wisdom teeth.

A root canal is where the individual nerve of the tooth is removed, the empty canal id filled and then a filling or crown on the top

For a normal filling the decay is removed and then the tooth is filled. If the decay goes into the nerve then a root treatment is done. If you have any questions please ask.
Reply:last time i went to the dentist he caused me a lot of grief as well as a hole in my bank that's as well as paying £20 a month, so if you have kids leaving school a dentist is the job to go for
Reply:my guy recently went to the dentist for the first time in over 20 years every tooth needs work .

on his first appointment most of his front tooth was drilled away and then build up .

when he arrived home he shook his head , i thought that's it he'll never go back .

instead he smiled and said "why did i leave it so long"

he's now realised that without knowing it over the years his smile has been lost by his subconsciously hiding his teeth .

his 5th visit to the dentist is tomorrow and he wouldn't miss it for anything .

PS the pain caused by your teeth rotting is progressive and so you have ignored it all along , but it's been there dragging you down and you will never believe the relief you will feel when it's gone .

let the dentist do his work and i can assure you you'll get the best present you have ever had - the smile you were born with !
Reply:Try not to be too scared. The dentist is o your side, and will sort out your teeth. After that, you have a new chance to look after them. Be brave, get it over with then put it behind you!
Reply:Root canal work takes time but is not usually particularly painful. The main problem is keeping your mouth open for long enough!

As a general rule, dentists usually find upper wisdom teeth easier to extract than lower ones although every case is different.

Teeth that are decayed often give no pain until the decay is very advanced. It is incredible how broken down teeth can get before patients realise there is a problem- indeed this is the source of many patients alleging that fillings were placed 'needlessly' as they had no pain when the filling was prescribed and placed.

The best thing to do is think of which parts of the treatment make you most anxious us and discuss them with your new dentist.

Hope this helps.
Reply:You're lucky that you had toothache to alert you to the fact you needed the dentist. Sometimes people's teeth are decaying without them realising because they don't get any pain, and then all of a sudden they find that there is so much work to be done. Reply:Hi hun, try not to worry. I know that's easy for someon eelse to say but I've worked at a dental practice for nine years so I know there's nothing to worry about. I wouldn't stay there if they tortured people! But seriously, you want to knwo why you haven't had any trouble with the other decayed teeth; well, the pain will only start when the decay reaches the nerve of the tooth, so it's a good thing that you're getting the other teeth fixed now before they do start to hurt. As for fillings and root canal treatments, they really are fine; I personally love being numbed up for any work I have done because then you don't feel a thing and you can just sit back and relax! You'll feel so much better afterwards. If you've got a good dentist they will talk you through some good oral hygiene routines and you'll have a gleaming smile in no time! If you've got a bit of a sweet tooth then you're dentist will try and discourage you from eating sweets, etc. but if you do have any, just remember to brush your teeth before you go to bed at night so the sugary deposits don't get a chance to sit on your teeth and do their nasty work! Lol! Good luck mate, hope it all goes well. Please email me to let me know how it was and above all, try not to worry!
