My hubby came up with a toothache on his lower left jaw yesterday. The pain was terrible for him and this morning he woke up with a golf ball size lump where the toothache is. I've tried to get him in on emergency to a Dentist but the office had already closed when the toothache started and they don't do emergencies here... What can he do to alleviate the pain and try to guard against any other side effects from the infection? Also, what should he watch for before he heads to emergency? Oh, and something new and weird has come up... I made him take a thermometer to work to make sure his temperature isn't rising, but it has in fact dropped to 95.5
My hubby is in terrible pain and I am so worried!?
Take him to the hospital. Let them find a dentist to treat him
It sounds like an infected abscess and the most likely reason his temperature has dropped is because is is very sick. So sick that his body can know longer fight the infection.

Don't waist any time, if it continues to get worse he could be in danger of blood poisoning.
Reply:Most hospitals have a dentist. You might call a nurse via phone on there hotline.
Reply:if theres a lump, theres already infection...get him to the hospital...they can't do dental work, but they can give him something for the pain and infection and maybe find a dentist that will see him...
Make him go as soon as possible...infections of the mouth can lead to nerve damage in the face, ears, eyes....
Reply:When I have a toothache I swish whiskey on the sore side of my mouth. This gets down in all the little crevices and kills the pain . Don't forget to spit it out.
Reply:if you cant' get to the dentist fast enough, try the er. they are going to have to put him on antibiotics before even doing anything. they can at least help with the pain and swelling before you can get in with the dentist. or...you can keep calling around to other dentist's to see if anyone offers and emergency contact to get him in.
Reply:Ow!
By all means, get him to a dentist ASAP.
Try taking Tylenol for the pain. Feed him soft, cool foods so there won't be any pressure to really get that tooth to boinging. Gargle lots of mouthwash, and have him run his toothbrush under hot water before he uses it: His teeth will be extremely sensitive.
Speaking of toothbrushes, after he uses it he can douse it with a bit of alcohol to kill the bacteria, then let it dry.
I wouldn't worry about the temperature: It may be difficult right now to get an accurate one due to the nature of the pain.
Reply:3% hydrogen peroxide from the dollar store----it works wonders
all he has to do is swish it in his mouth every three minutes---spit out and repeat
---no need to dilute it with water
Reply:Either your regular dentist or your medical doctor can call him in an antibiotic . He needs that immediately- penicillin or amoxicillin and for pain , exra strenght tynol, 2 hrs later advil, 2 hours later tylenol unless he has some other meds or condtion that prevent him from taking these. The pain is the infection putting pressure on everything. You surely have a minor emegercy, hospital er or docotr you can cal. Most dentists list themselves in the phone book so you can call them in case of an emgercy. The fee for the visit is often not covered by insurance if the dentist sees you after hours though. My charges 345. but he comes. Read the phone book for dentists that take emergencies. - or call the office number and maybe the answering service will get ahold of your dentists.
Reply:Take him to urgent care tonight. They can prescribe antibiotics that will help with infection, pain medicine so he will be comfortable and a numbing cream for INSIDE of the mouth. You want to get him in to see the doctor so the infection does not get worse.
Reply:While an ER will not be able to do dental work, they can give him pain meds and antibiotics for the infection.
I have found that rinsing with Listerine in the infected area will alleviate the pain. It does hurt, but it will help with the pain.
An abscess can lead to other more serious problems. There was a child in New York that died from a toothache because the infection went to his brain.
Good luck and I hope he gets well soon.
Reply:The lump is probably an abscess meaning it is already infected. The spice ground cloves applied directly on the area will temporarily ease the pain, though it does nothing to heal the infection nor does it taste very good.
But it can be enough to survive the hurt until regular dental office hours on Monday.
Reply:Toothaches are painful but can be prevented
by take suitable precautions. Avoid eating
food which will result in the formation of acid
in the mouth, brush teeth regularly with a fluoride
toothpaste. I found the information at

Reply:Your husband is lucky to have you! Take the advice on here. I believe it is rare to have serious complications from an infected tooth, although a dentist may correct me. Your husband has a legitimate reason to visit an A and E department of your local hospital. Although you might have to wait. In the mean time take as many combinations of painkillers that is safe to take. A bag of ice or frozen peas held to the face can help.
