Why are there so many dental emergencies over long holiday weekends?

It seems that every year that goes by that there is at least one person I know who has a dental emergency over a long holiday weekend.

I’m just curious how many of you out there are experiencing a “tooth emergency”? It goes to figure that most dentists are closed until Wednesday July 5, 2006. Appointments are always backed up due to the fact there are so many dental (tooth) emergencies over the long weekend! And please feel free to visit my yahoo 360 page entitled the Edge of America for a message from the Haunted “Holiday” tooth!

Why are there so many dental emergencies over long holiday weekends?
The same reason that on a day with a full moon, you get all the weird patients too! And it never fails with my animals, they always get sick over holiday weekends too! Memorial Day is the worst for me! I can think of at least a few times I was at the animal ER on that weekend.

I think people also freak out because they cant get in right away. What normally would be 'oh I need to call the dentist and get in soon' turns into 'oh my god I cant get in right away it is a holiday, oh gosh what am I going to do? oh no!'

I remember when the whole office went to a 3 day seminar, now we only took off 2 days of seeing patients, but when we got back, the answering machine was full and people were irate! Never before did we have more than 3-4 messages over a weekend and all the sudden there were so many the machine overloaded! Goodness.
Reply:Over a Holiday, people eat much differently than they do normally. Also - lots of people procrastinate! "I'll take care of my toothache after the Holiday."
Reply:That's the way it always is. If the dentist is out then you need him. My kids pediatrician always takes Wed off, and gee guess what, I need him more on those days then any other. Go figure. Crazy to say the least. I have to admit that the thought of the dental emergency is worse. Heck I would rather have a baby then go to the dentist. So if you really need one because of the pain it's horrible. Right up there with giving birth, except after having a baby you have something to show for it and the pain for the most part is gone, it's not that way with dental stuff. That pain is the worst. I know..... I'm a wimp to say the least, but that does come from having really bad experiences with horrible dentist. YIKES!!!!!! My kids though have a great dentist, he is wonderful so times are changing and that's good. It's definitely not like it use to be.
